『英米小説演習』が授業のレポートなら、さしずめ本書は授業の「実況中継」。
まず筆者らしい、授業風景のコマメな説明が４ページほどあり、３００語〜４００語程度の英文原典を、２・３文に分け、学生数人の訳文をていねいに添削していくのが授業の骨格で、その添削過程が授業の/本書の中味。そこから、翻訳の苦労というか、吟味のしかたが、あるときは主観的に、またあるときは経験法則に基づいて、じつに愛情ある細やかな配慮がなされ、同時に、学生たちへの懇切謙虚な指導がなされている。本書の帯のコメントも、本書を出版する意義について読者に対してある種の申し訳なさを含めて書かれてある文章も必読。
そういう意味で、読み物としても楽しいし、英文和訳の実戦テキストとしても愉しく使えます。

「文章とは、単に意味を伝えるのみならず、それを書いた者の肉体生理をも伝えるものでなければならない」。本書を読んでいる間、常に頭から離れなかったのが福田恆存のこの言葉だった。もし福田が正しければ、翻訳者は二重の苦労を背負うことになる。すなわち、原作者の生理を正しく感じ取り、今度はそれを正しく訳文に反映させるという苦労である。本書を読めば、翻訳とは単なる言語変換作業ではなく、原作文の奥底を洞察し、変換しようとする言語にそれを組み込むプロセスに他ならないことがよく分かるだろう。

著者と学生は本書の中で、こうした高い志をもって一つの単語の意味、文章中における位置、リズムなどについて侃侃諤諤している。読者もこの授業に参加することによって、言葉に対する感性が大いに刺激されるだろう。ただ、他者の語感は必ずしも自分のそれと一致しない。学生世代との語感の違いに時おり戸惑いを隠しきれない著者の姿が微笑ましくも興味深く、こうした部分も翻訳の難しい点だと気付かされる。また、著者は学生と共に考え、共に悩みながら授業を進めており、自身の訳文に対する学生の指摘を素直に認める懐の深さが実に清く快い。

さらに、村上春樹が『キャッチャー・イン・ザ・ライ』のyouの訳し方について説明している部分（Ｐ１６０）も誠に奥深い。ここだけでも何度も読み返す価値があると思う。「翻訳とはネイティブに訊けばわかるというものではない」との発言は挑戦的ですらある。

ただ、残念ながら本書にも欠点がある。それは、こちらがいくら声を張り上げて質問しても、本の中の先生が振り向いてくれないことだ。これには大変なストレスを感じるので、いつの日か、言葉というものに執着を持つ一般人向け実地講座を開催していただきたい。

　これは、実際にテキストにある英文を自分で訳して、時間をかけて楽しんだならば、文句なく五つ星ですね。「翻訳教室」の部分と、村上春樹をゲストに招いてその創作の秘密を探る部分と、一粒で二度おいしい本でもあるし。
　それにしても、最高学府に入学すれば、こんなにも楽しく充実した授業が受けられるってことで、受験生の励みにもなります。言葉の選び方がいかにセンシティブで重要かって言うことがよくわかる。「日本語は罵倒語のバラエティーが貧しい」なんてのはまさに文化な訳で。逆に、「相手に対して利益、不利益になることを言う表現は日本語の方が豊富」なんてこともある。ゲストのジェイ・ルービンの「翻訳とは科学的なものじゃない。（中略）客観的に、何の感情も入れないで訳しても、ある言葉の文法をもう一つ別の言葉の文法に移すだけで、無茶苦茶になってしまう。個人の解釈が入らないことには、何も伝わってこないと思います」ってのもよくわかる。たまにWebのExcite翻訳で日本文を英文に訳して、その英文をさらに日本文に訳して、っていうのを機械的に合わせ鏡のように繰り返すって遊びをやるんだけど、数回繰り返すと伝言ゲームみたいに奇妙奇天烈な文章になっちゃうんだよね。やっぱ翻訳って人ありきだよな。
　詳細は読んでのお楽しみだけど、村上春樹が学生の質問に答える形で、珍しく作家評や自らの創作方法、自作の批評に対する考え方などを明かしていているのも興味深い。村上春樹の読者にもお薦めの一冊になっています。
