これを読んだ当初は著者がそんなに有名な翻訳家だとは
つゆしらず。たまたま見かけて買ったら大当たり。

まずそのタイトルにひきつけられる。
一体何の本なんだろう…。表紙もなんだかかわいらしいし。

果たして読んでみるに、いかにも英語の先生らしい、
授業の合間に語られる、ちょっと集中力の途切れた生徒を

もう一度振り向かせるのに最適な英語系（もちろんそれ以外も
あるけれども）豆知識満載のエッセイ。

本好き、笑えるエッセイ好き、の人には読んで欲しい一冊です。

この本の著者柴田元幸は村上春樹とも交流のある、東大で教鞭をとっている翻訳家です。では内容は文学論など堅苦しいものかーといいますと、全くそんなことはありません。

日常生活で誰もが感じることを、今まで接してきたたくさんの本の内容と沿わせながらユーモラスに語ったエッセイです。

何か教訓がありそうでないようで、やっぱりないかというような不思議で穏やかな雰囲気をもった一冊です。

てれんてれんと続く、長いセンテンスが心地よい。彼の訳した文章が好きな人は、まず文体だけで快感を得られるだろう。本は内容なんか二の次、読んでいてキモチイイかどうかが最優先、という人にはとくにおすすめ。
とはいえ、この本の内容は二の次にする必要がない。さまざまな作家の名文が引用されて、次にこれを読もうという気になる。ごく短い小説みたいな章もある。いずれも、およそ無茶苦茶な理屈や事象や空想を妙にさらりと読ませる。語り口が生真面目だからこそ醸し出されるおかしみがある。
