　初めてビートルズを聴いたのはいつだっただろうか。
最近、うちにあったビートルズの古いビデオを見た１３歳の息子が、「歌詞を教えて」とリストを作って持って来た。
「HELP」「ALL TOU NEED IS LOVE」「TICKET TO RIDE」などなど。

主人の大切なレコードから歌詞カードを出して来て、私がポチポチとワープロで打っていたが、

その後も、リクエストは増え続け、ワープロ打ちでは追いつかなくなってきた。
そこで、歌詞集がないものかと思っていたら、主人がこの
「COMPLETE LYRICS OF THE BEATLES」を見つけてくれた。

つい２，３年前にはポケモンに夢中だった息子がビートルズを・・・と思ったら、何だか感慨深い。
少し大人に近づいた息子に、お父さんからのプレゼント。

　ビートルズの歌詞を翻訳する者は、数多くいるが、一人一人が主張を持って訳するものだから、歌詞の解釈、翻訳の内容・雰囲気は千差万別である。内田久美子は、この版以前９０年にもおなじような｢全詩集｣を出している。個々人で解釈が違う・訳し方が違うのはわかるとしても、１個人でも年毎に解釈が変わる、それがビートルズなのだ。今日のベストは、これ！明日は、どうなるか、どの曲が自分の中では、第１位を占めるのか、日本語に約するとすればどういう感じになるのか、わからない。このような翻訳者の悩みは、今後もずっと続くんだろうなあ。だから、私は、敢えて訳さない。　”Let It Be!”なんて、日本語にならないよ。

ビートルズというと当人たちが自分の演奏が聞こえないとぼやくぐらいの悲鳴と歓声でファンがラブコールをするというのがつきものですが、この訳詞は柔らかくて囁くようで、まるで訳詞を通してビートルズと触れ合っているようで、読んでいて気持ち良くなりました。ビートルズの詩を翻訳して読者に読ませるというよりも、ビートルズの詩を英語で受け取って日本語で解釈し、彼らにラブコールを投げ返しているような印象を受けます。ＣＤの対訳以外に最近ではネットでも訳詞や解釈が出回っているので、この本と照らし合わせれば英語の勉強にもなります。

星が一つ少ないのは、アルバム順の目次が検索しにくいからです。この曲の詩を知りたいと急に思い立った時にアルバム順で最後にアルバムに入っていないシングルカットが来る目次で調べるのは、ビートルズにそれほど詳しくない自分には手間も時間もかかる。それと、なかなか手に入りにくいのもちょっとマイナスポイントかな。まあ、個人的なことですが。
