ドイツ政治思想の専門家である著者が、聖書の言葉と日本の近代史と取り組むというだけでも興味をかきたてられる。欧米ならばともかく、一件無関係に思える日本においての聖書と政治の不思議な関係を実証的に明らかにしていく丹念な手法は、すでに著者において確立した方法論であろう。左翼とは違ったラディカルな思想の在り方の一つの例をここに見る。

大日本帝国政府のもとで、次第に狭められて行った「良心の自由」と「信教の自由」。その流れに日本の教会が抵抗することができなかったのは、そのローマ書13章の釈義の問題に起因することを明らかにする。中でも、ナチズムに抵抗した告白教会のカール・バルトの1930年台の神学論文『義認と法』が、ハインリッヒ・シュリーアの「悪鬼的天使的国家権力論」を効果的に援用していつつも、昭和初期にそれが日本に紹介された時には、検閲を恐れての「改変」が施され、こうして、日本には告白教会に類するものが生まれ得なかったことが明らかにされる。ただし、著者は、ハインリッヒ・シュリーア、ギュンター・デーン、カール・バルト、オスカー・クルマンらが言う「悪鬼的天使的国家権力論」は、「その誤りが戦後の神学的議論で決着済み」だと、一顧だにしない。この軽いあしらい方は、ウルリッヒ・ドゥフロウの『神の支配とこの世の権力の思想史 : 聖書・アウグスティヌス・中世・ルター』と共通するものであって、どちらも、「ゲルハルト・キッテルが退けたから」のひと言で終えてしまう。しかし、実際には、ローマ書13章の「エクスーシア」の釈義をめぐる議論は決着を見ているわけではなく、日本新約学会会長の松木治三郎などは、この議論はそんな簡単に決着がつくものではないとし、むしろ悪鬼的天使的国家権力論を支持すらしている（『ローマ人への手紙　翻訳と解釈』572ページ）。ドゥフロウ／宮田の共通点は、いずれもヘンドリクス・ベルコフの『キリストと諸権力』を参照していないらしいことで、今後は、ベルコフを踏まえた議論の再検討が求められるのではなかろうか？
