　深夜寝静まった民家を襲い現金を盗み出す「ノビ師」。本作品は、長編の形をとっているが、内容的には「ノビカベ」こと真壁修一を主人公とした連作短編集である。司法試験を目指していた15年前、空き巣の常習犯となった双子の弟・啓二を道連れに母親が自宅に放火し焼死した。この日を境に、修一の意識に啓二が棲むようになり、修一は弟を奪った母親への当てつけとしてノビ師となる。
　ノビ師の仕事を手伝いながらも何とか久子と修一の仲を修復させようとする啓二、そして、修一を待ち続ける久子、本作品は、「弟啓二と母親の関係」「幼なじみの久子との関係」、の二つを軸に、６つのエピソードが展開され、作品の最後に大きな秘密が明らかにされる。

　作者のこれまでの作品のなかで、ハードボイルド色が強い本作だが、それぞれのエピソードが作品の他の作品同様、よく練り込まれている。私にとって年の「クライマーズハイ（作者の作品）」以来の徹夜本となった。

前作「クライマーズ･ハイ」では従来の警察小説から新たに世界を広げた著者だが、本作では寝静まった家に忍び入る「ノビ師」を主人公にしている。

母親に道連れにされて火事で焼け死んだ弟。その内耳に響く弟の声との対話が話の重要な部分を占めているためか、今までの作品と比べると心理描写の部分が多く、かつ哀愁の漂う感じがする作品に仕上がっている。

従来の犯罪小説や推理小説、ハードボイルドという枠組みを超えた作品と見ることもでき、横山秀夫が新たなジャンルに挑戦した作品といえるかもしれない。

相変わらず、1つ1つの作品には細かい伏線が張られていて、読んでいくうちに作品の組み立ての複雑さに感嘆させられる。さすがだ。

　家人が寝静まった頃に忍び込み、盗みを働く「ノビ」を専門の生業とするノビ師の真壁修一は所轄警察からも同業者からも「ノビカベ」と呼ばれ一目置かれている。

　修一には双子の弟・啓二がいた。しかし15年前、啓二の境遇を苦にした母親によって焼死させられてしまった。修一と啓二は同じ女性（久子）に思いを寄せるもお互いを認めあっていた。それだけに世間体を気にして啓二を奪った母親が許せずに、法を捨てノビ師となる。

　連作の短編となる本作品はややオカルト的な設定だが特段奇異に感じるほどでもない。それは侵入のテクニックやオカルト的設定に任せた謎解きに頼ってはいないからだ。リアリティ云々よりも「修一が見ていた双子の弟」と「母親が見ていた息子」の明暗が色濃く出ているように思う。
　巧妙な伏線や哀切たっぷりな心理描写はさすが。『影踏み』というタイトルにも深みがある。
