著者ののべている腕のない人の絵、通称「頭足人」は世界中の子どもが、発達の過程で描くものであり、全世界の子どもたちに共通で、言語、習慣、民族、国籍を超えて同じ表現をするもので、はるか昔からその存在が知られています。
私がこの本を読んで疑問に思ったのは、文献をあたる過程でそのような記載にあたらなかったのは何故かということでした。
この本に一貫しているのはこのことだけに限らず、小数の主観的な観察ではなく、きちんとデータを取る、探すという客観的事実を追求しようとするなら誰もがとらなくてはならない基本的な姿勢がまるで欠如してるということ。この人はこんなこといってたんですよ、的な話ばかり。万事が万事そんな調子。
考察についてもきちんとした因果関係を示す事実など何ひとつ示さず、あるのは間接的なほのめかしか、居酒屋の素人の野球談義みたいなオレはこう思うんだよ、みたいな話ばかり。
著者は小説家なのでそういう気分で書いたのかなと思いましたが、事実を追従する本には何も論文みたいに書けとはいいませんが最低限の姿勢、質ぐらいは必要なんじゃないでしょうか。

　赤ちゃん雑誌や子育て体験記を読んだり、「親業講座」というのも受講しました。子どもとの接しかた、話しかたや技法などを学んで、それなりに子育てに自信がもてたと思いましたが、こうしなくちゃとか、ああしなくちゃとか頭でっかちになっちゃって。親の役目に疲れぎみのとき、この本に出会い、読み終えたときは肩のチカラが抜けてほんとにラクになった！子どもと一緒に親の私も成長してけばいいんだ。そう思えたんです。最初はちょっと怖い気がしましたが、ネガティブな問題もきちんと見せてくれて、子育てにとって本当に大切なことを自分で考え見つけられた気がします。（育児論として新しいとか古いとか、粗雑な論理とか。そんな批判はなんのため？　この本は子どものことを真剣に考えている愛ある１冊です。）

読んで、答えの導き出せる本ではない。ひとつひとつの問題に対し、安易に著者が結論を書くことをしていない。
だからこそ、一度、この本を子どもと同じ保育園に通う親たちにも読んでもらったら、形だけでない本音の語り合いができるかもしれない、と思った。
著者がそういった部類の専門家でないからだと思うが、だからこそ、本当にまっさらな視点でさまざまな取材を行い、現在良しとされている育児にも先入観なく疑問を持ち、それが大変新鮮で、ある意味大きな衝撃を受けた。何度も読み返そうと思う。我が子は、大丈夫だろうか。
