確かに面白いです。
「未確認巨大生物」という男が食いつきやすい設定がものの見事に奏功し、ひきこまれ、どんどん読めます。
登場するヒロインの人権を完全に無視した性的暗さも絡めて、まさに男性読者をひきつける要素を完全に備えた作品です。

しかし筆者が主人公に代弁させているかのような「俺はアメリカを知り尽くしているが、アメリカを肯定するわけじゃない」というような主張が気になります。
アメリカ人と主人公とのやりとりに「国際社会通な自分」を投影したがっているようで鼻についてしまいました。

平家落人の僻村、天狗伝説が語られる寒村での連続殺人事件、米軍とその手先のような県警、遺伝子、UMA等の『魅力的』な材料で構成されるミステリー。昭和40年代・現代、僻村・アメリカと展開するストーリーはスリリングである。

がしかし、女性には全く受けないだろうな。人権云々を語るには彩恵子はあまりにも女性の人権を無視した設定だ。大薮賞選考委員は『彩恵子のキャラクターが際立って鮮やか』と絶賛したらしいが、世の女性に『男は身勝手』と言われそうだ。
とすると男性向けということかもしれないが、あんまり共感できない。
明らかに悪人の設定である男だけでなく、主人公やFBIの捜査官もやっていることは自分勝手で残虐だ。飽くなき探究心、自分勝手なジェラシーは誰にでもあると思うが、例え箍が外れても、この本に出てくる男たちのように振舞う可能性はないだろうと思った時点でリアリティを感じなかった。

ミステリーとしても不満だ。『UMA以外の何者がこんな残虐な殺人事件を起こしうるのか』を期待して読み進めたが結局はUMAの仕業。もう一ひねり期待した読者は少なくないのではないか？

この作家を読むのは初めて、確かに筆力はある、面白い。

しかし、着想の奇想天外さと結末の肩透かし感、ベトナムとか911テロが絡むため、もっと深刻なミステリーを期待する向きには甘すぎる。

主人公や周辺の男達の描写は、自由に憧れる男の身勝手なロマンが横溢しており、そこに感情移入できるか否かが本書の評価の分かれ目になるだろう。女性像は男の理想系でしか描かれず、一時代前の小説を読むかのようだ。

まあ、それではあっても、彼のデビュー作となった「下山事件　最後の証言」を彼の筆致で読んでみたいという気にさせてはくれた。柴田作品は男に捧げるスピリッツか。
