面白くないかといわれれば、面白いと答える。
しかし、何か違う。
従来の横山秀夫ものから緊迫感や緊張感を除いたものにハードボイルドの味付けをしたのが、本書と言えよう。
横山秀夫作品の緊迫感が好きだという方にはあまりおすすめできない。逆にハードボイルドものが好きな方にはおすすめである。
気になったのは、帯の惹句。
「かってこれほどせつない」は貴志祐介の「青の炎」ですでに使われており、そちらのほうがぴったりくると思う。

横山秀夫の小説にしては、かなり異色です。
主人公がいわゆる“警察の敵（お客さん？）”ですし、
死んだ双子の弟が意識の中（中耳）で同居するという
オカルト的な一面も持ち合わせています。
しかし、小説自体はは今までの横山さんの作品と同じく
精緻な描写、巧妙なストーリー展開が楽しめます。
そして全体に漂うハードボイルドな空気感も魅力的です。
何気ない描写の中に、何気なくヒントが隠されているので
何度も唸らされました…。
確かに異色ではありますが、これは紛れもなく横山作品です！

横山氏の作品を読むのは、本作が初めてでした。
他作家の探偵ものや刑事ものの作品は、これまでにもいくつか読んだ事がありますが、
それらと比べても頭一つ抜き出ている感じがしました。
読者を引き込む描写やストーリーはもちろん素晴らしいのですが、なによりも主人公の設定が秀逸だったと思います。
一見ファンタジーちっくに捉えてしまいそうになる弟の存在。
実はこれ、ちゃんとした裏づけをもって創られたかなりリアルな存在だったんですね。

・拭いきれない過去の事件
・兄弟の葛藤・・・嫉妬
・一卵性双生児

ネタバレは控えたいので、直接的な表現は避けますが、
心理学を学んでいる方やそういったミステリー小説を多く読んでいる方にはピンとくるかもしれませんね。
物語を追うだけでも面白いですが、そういった部分を深読みしていくと面白さは倍以上になると思います。
真壁の孤独な物語。
多くの人に読んでほしい作品です。
