有栖川有栖の中篇サスペンス。
有栖川有栖の中篇サスペンス。
江神先輩シリーズや火村英生シリーズとも違う、犯罪心理小説。

「蜃気楼に手を振るとあちらの世界に連れて行かれる」という言い伝えの通り、こっそり手を振った三つ子の長兄はその数日後に事故死。それから30年近く後、自堕落な次兄文彰と早発性痴呆の母を抱える末子の満彦は、帰り道にバイクの事故現場で3000万円という大金を拾う。目撃者はいない。この金で母を劣悪なケアハウスから救い出せる・・・。その上満彦は、柄にもなく金を警察に届けると言い出した文彰をはずみで殺してしまう。死体さえ隠せば自分と3000万円の接点は何もないはずだった・・・

満彦が一夜にして犯罪者になってしまってからは、中篇らしくテンポよく物語が進み、これまでの作品にはなかったサスペンス色も盛り込んで一気に読ませる。不幸にも偶然に偶然が重なり、捜査の手は思わぬところから満彦を捉える。一瞬の出来心からあれよあれよと転落する真面目男の悲哀が全体を染め、何ともやるせない。悪い動機ではないだけにちょっとかわいそう。全てが明らかになる瞬間は、犯罪推理小説ゆえに、「謎解き」というよりは「オチ」と言った方がいい。（※クイーンの『最後の一撃』をさらに大掛かりにした感じ。）うーん、これは、こういった形の中篇にしか使えないかな、というオチ。
有栖川作品としてはちょっと変わっているが、これはこれでよく出来ている異色作。

　『幻想都市の四季』の終篇。倉知淳『春　無節操な死人』、我孫子武丸『夏　夏に散る花』、摩耶雄嵩『秋　闇雲Ａ子と憂鬱刑事』に続く第４弾。ただし、舞台を同じにするという縛りをかけただけの競作なので、春から読む必要はない。一冊だけでも楽しめる。しかも、各冊とも中編一本で一冊にしたもので、かなり簡単に読めてしまう。
　ミステリとしての完成度はとても低い。期待しないで読まないようにしないと、がっかりする。まあ、中編だと思えば、腹も立たないかな？

著者の有栖川氏はミステリー作家です。氏の作品のほとんどを読んできましたが、常に現実的に整合性のある物語をかかれる方で、最近流行りのアンチ・ミステリーを書かれる作家さんではありません。
…ということを知っている私でさえ、「これはもしや…」と思うような非現実感が、この作品には常に付きまといます。物語の書き方はどこまでも現実的なのに、どこか蜃気楼のように「幻」を感じさせるのです。その幻の姿を追っているうちに話はどんどんと進み、最後にはほとんどそれに捕らわれます。
物語終盤に友人がラーメンを作ってくれたのですが、結果は表題のとおり（ちゃんと完食しましたよ）。
ところどころに効いている皮肉も心地いい。中篇でも食い足りないということは決してありません。おすすめです。
