タイトルに反して子供の絵画表現を追っているわけではないし、画像の一枚も載っていない。
著者の中で既に出来上がっている持論「最近の子供は貧しい体験しかしていない」に合致する証拠を集めているだけ。

小学生の画力が落ちているのは本当だろう。しかしその原因は、小学校の図工の時間に描く絵が、写実重視から内面の表現の重視へとシフトして、"写生"をあまりしなくなったからだと個人的には思う。

　あらかじめ書いておくと、この本に書いてあること全てを鵜呑みにしている訳ではない。

　なぜ、腕のない絵を描く子どもが増えてきたのか？　筆者が最初に調べた本で、すぐに理由が見付かる。すなわち、
「親の強い指示や命令、あるいは過剰な世話やきが原因」
　だが、筆者はこの説明に納得できない。理由は、なんとなく。

　次に、こういう絵を描く子どもが目立ち始めた次期と、育児の考え方が変わって「スキンシップ」を重視し始めた次期とが一致することに気付く。
　筆者はすぐに、これだと思う。理由は、直感。

　要するに筆者は、「しつけの厳格主義は善、甘やかしは悪」というイデオロギーに捕らえられているのだ。これに反する結論はいっさい受け入れなれない。その頑なな姿勢は本書の随所に見られる。

　この筆者の意見に従えば、育児にまつわる全ての問題は、子育ての「スキンシップ」信仰が始まってから起こった。筆者の育てられた昭和三十年代の子育てには、そう言った問題はいっさい起こらなかった。

　だが、筆者と同じ年の生まれの人間として言わせてもらうが、昭和三十年代生まれの子どもたちは、思春期に於いては家庭内暴力で親や兄弟を殺し、校内暴力で教師を傷付け、人の子の親となっては子どもを虐待死させ、教師になった者は体罰で生徒を死傷させ、果ては年老いた両親を虐待死させる、家族殺しの世代なのだ。

　家庭の崩壊は、すでに昭和三十年代には始まっていた。筆者は、子どもの問題を「腕の無い絵」に限定することで、これらの問題を黙殺している。

　そんな訳でこの本の全てが正しい訳ではないが、今の子どもの問題が虐待的なしつけや過干渉が原因であるという結論に異論は無い。早期教育が子どもの学力を下げているという意見にも同意する。ビデオを見せ過ぎることの弊害に関する説明も、きわめて納得のいくものだった。

　出発点は欺瞞的、だが、結論は正しい。これがこの本に対する私の評価だ。

「子供の仕事は遊び」
古くから言われていることに、
結局のところは、
落ち着いてしまう。

それでも、
詰め込むだけ知識を詰め込まれている、
子供たちの悲鳴は伝わってきた。

子供を楽しませることができない親は、
たぶん、楽しく生きていないんだろう。
