最近、さるアメリカ人が書いた奇妙な昭和天皇論が話題であるが、昭和天皇および日本の近代史を論じる際にこの本を無視することは大きな欠陥の刻印を議論に示すことになるだろう。

昭和天皇の自己規定という気づきそうで見過ごされてきた論点を掘り起こしたことも秀逸なら、そこから戦前に天皇を取り巻く環境を分析する手際もまさに圧巻。

昭和天皇が、立憲君主制を理解しない政権内の馬鹿どもの中で、立憲君主の王道を真摯に歩まれた名君であることを教えられた。

ちなみに、橋爪大三郎、宮台真司といった小室スクールの論者達の天皇論はすべて本書を虎の巻の一つにしていると私は考えるのだが・・・。

本書で述べられているのはあくまで「昭和天皇の研究」であり、「天皇制の研究」ではない。しかし、昭和天皇個人を研究することにより、敗戦にまで至る日本の様々な問題点を浮かび上がらせる好著となっている。

戦前の天皇像は、一部の軍人や政治家や学者によって歪められてしまったのであるが、天皇が自分が神であると言ったことが無く、自らが神に対しての儀式を行っていたのに、人間でなく現人神と奉ってしまった日本人の国民性自体にも大きな問題があるだろう。

また、天皇個人は国際平和を希求し反ファッショであったにもかかわらず、厳格すぎるくらい立憲君主に徹していたため、逆の結果を招いてしまったのは皮肉としか言いようがない。本書を読み終えた後、昭和天皇が抱えていた苦悩に改めて思いを至らせた次第である。

　平成元年に出版されたが、1995年に文庫化、2004年に「裕仁天皇の昭和史ー平成への遺訓　そのとき、なぜそう動いたのか」と改題してソフトカバーの単行本として再出版されている。
　「昭和天皇はどのように自分を規定していたか」という観点でまとめられた天皇研究の書である。書評は「裕仁天皇の昭和史」に譲るが、昭和を考える良書の一つだと思う。
　最近の書中にこちらのタイトルで引用されていたので、あえてコメントした。
