　特に若い男性にお勧めです。同時に，女性にも価値ある本です。なぜなら，古めかしいですが「男性」の存立基盤を余すことなく語っているからです。男女は補完的な存在という考える方も世の中には少なくないと思います。その考え方に従えば，男性がどういった男らしさを目指すのか，相対的に女性がどのような女性らしさを必要とされているのか，その一つのモデル像が本書に示されていると思われます。

　それ以上は私の説明よりも，以下の抜粋が雄弁にそのエッセンスを伝えてくれます。

・弱い人は待っていられない。どうしても結論を早く出してしまう（P. 173）。

・家庭，親，兄弟というには，まず大切にしなくてはならない。現実に，こういった人をおろそかにして偉くなったという人の話は，聞いたことがありません。（P. 199）。

・そもそも，勝負ごとは一人でやらないといけないのです（P. 201）。

・仕事と家庭と遊びでは，仕事が断然上位なのですが，この三つともうまくいっている時が，男は一番幸せなのだ，というのが私の人生観，あるいは人生設計といえます（P. 227）。

・勝負事にせよ，一般の仕事にせよ，人間が何かをする場合に，その軸になっているのは，やはり，その人の人生観だと思う（P. 20）。

・では，いったいどうすればその運をつかまえられるのか（中略）一言で言ってしまうと，自分の利害にはたいした影響のない勝負で，必死に頑張ることです（P. 33）。

・本当に強くなりたい，勉強したいと思ったら，まず，独立心というか，孤独に耐えられる力が必要です。最終的に頼れるのは自分自身の力だけなんだ，ということがわかっていないと，本当の成長はできない（P. 49）。

　女性の社会進出などの状況は本書が世に出た時点と大きく異なりますが，なお本書に描写される男の姿は一つの生き方のモデル像として色褪せません。理屈抜きにまず読んでほしい本です。

実力は伯仲しているはずなのに、なぜか勝てない。
こんなに努力をしているのに日の目を見ない。
最後のところでどんでん返しを食らってしまう。

そんな人はこの本を読んで、自分の態度が、勝利の女神に好かれるものだったかを、じっくりと確認するのがよい。
この本は、勝負とは表面に現れる実力のみによって決着がつくものではない、という真理を、多くの事例を用いて解説してくれる。

「何よりも悪手を指さないこと」が人生で重要、とは著者の言葉だが、自分が知らない間に悪手を指していることがどれほどあったことか。
勝負が勝負以外の場で決着がつくことを理解すると、日常の何気ない会話や、人との接し方にも注意を払うことができるだろう。

この本は，私の最も影響を受けた本です。第７章「男らしさとはなにか」だけでも私にとって人生の道標です。初版である新書版が発行されてから２０年経っているわけですが，その間何度も読み返しました。勝負の３要素は確率，勢い，そして運。仮説がなければ，チャンスは生かせない，等々，男の生き様論の連続。その後の米長永世棋聖の著作はやや抹香臭い（それはそれで私は好きですが）ものもありますが，この本は大変プラグマチックですから誰にでもお勧めできます。まずは手に取ってみてください。
