評者は５年ほど前から環境教育関連ＮＰＯなどに参加して、環境保全活動の現場に立つことも増えているのだが、「自然との共生」を謳い文句にする現在の自然保護運動の多くを、「自己中心的な利己的欲望」と断罪する著者の主張には、深い共感を覚える。特に「他人に自分の自然観を押し付け、自分に不都合な悪い変化はすべて糾弾しようとする」などの言葉は、保護・保全の現場でしばしば見つかる、近視眼的な“環境保護原理主義の皆さん”に、是非一度聞かせてやりたいものだ（笑）。
自然保護・保全に関わる人は（私自身も含めて）、一度はこの本を読んで、自らのある種の“上から目線”を反省した方が良い。

しかしこの本には重大な欠点がいくつかあって、その一つは、著者の主張を裏付けるエビデンスとしての事例紹介がほとんどないことである。自分が経験した少数の事例を全体に引き伸ばして、「そもそも○○なんてものは…」と主観的な批判をするのであれば、そんなものは酔っ払いの愚痴と変わらない。

そしてもう一つ、更に大きな欠点は、自己愛の発露としての自然保護活動を否定したい思いが強すぎるあまり（？）、読者を、自然保護思想そのものの否定へと導きかねないことだ。著者本来の主張は、「環境破壊（改変）は人間の本能に基づく行動であり、環境保護活動すら、その人の利己的活動に過ぎない。」ということを十分に認識した上で、「自然保護活動の意義や、あり方を問い直せ。」という辺りなのだろうと推察するのだが、多くの読者はむしろ、「自然保護なんて無意味だ。どんどん自然破壊して良いのだ。」と感じてしまうのではないか。著者の本意は分からないものの、その点では、最近流行りの「○○のウソ」本の類に思われても仕方がない。

著者の主張には共感しつつも、これらの欠点を考えると、とても気軽に他人に薦めることは出来ない。環境問題や保護・保全活動に関するリテラシーの高い読者にのみ、お勧めしたい。星３つ。

　今の日本には「自然との共生」という言葉が溢れかえっている。この言葉さえ使っておれば、天下ご免である。そこにひそむ矛盾をあらためて提示し、我々のあり方をもう一度考え直そうとしているのが、本書のテーマである。
「何かおかしい」と思わなければ、もう人類は終わりだ。私たちが見つめている自然は「本物の自然」なのか。なんでもかんでも取っておきたい人ごころ。
「エコーツアー」とは何か‥正義の押し売り〈保護に関わる自分たちを正義の番人として正当化〉とそれが当たり前だとしての免罪符やいかに。
　種の大量絶滅、そしていつか人類も絶滅へ、人間の運命を予知する。「自然と共生」というウソ。自分保護としての自然保護でしかない。跳梁跋跋扈する人間が出しゃばらず、謙虚であること〈少子化肯定など声高に言えないが〉の大切さを教えられる。
