NHKの大河ドラマ「風林火山」を見て，本書のタイトルのとおり，「山本勘助とは何者？」と思い読んでみました．

歴史の学会的には，「山本勘助は架空の人物であった」とか「軽輩であった」という説が有力なようです．山梨県生まれで，新聞記者時代から本書のテーマを追い続けてきた著者はこれに対して，独自の調査によって「勘助は実在した」「信玄に重用された」と結論づけています．生い立ちについては諸説あり，これについては多くの「勘助」の情報が混乱して今の勘助像が作られたというお話はなるほどと思わせます．少し著者の思い入れが強すぎるように思いますが，そこは読者の見識に任されるところでしょう．

勘助が実在しなかったという説がいかに間違っているかということを、いわゆる「市河文書」などを援用して論難する(第一章)のですが、なにぶん筆致に敵意がこもっており、思わず身構えてしまった。およそ真実（と信じていること）を主張したい場合、できるだけ冷静に筆を進めるほうが逆にドスがきいていて説得力を持つ場合がままある、と私などは考えておりますが、どうも著者は読者を納得させるための、それこそ「軍略」に無頓着な感じがしました（無論この著者だけではないんですが……）。
