本書は雁行形について色々な事例をあげながら、古代の住宅（寝殿造り）から近世（明治、大正）にいたるまでの変化を詳しく解説している。さらに、雁行形が使われる理由や根拠、その要因についても述べられているのでとても参考になる。

日本建築と西洋建築を気候、風土、文化の点から比較し、かつてコルビュジェが「住宅は住むための機械である」と言って建築は合理的に大量生産されてきが、その国や地域での建築のアイデンティティを捉え直そうと示唆している。だからと言って西洋建築を批判するのでなく、どちらが良いということでもない。二十世紀は過去にもっていたその国特有の文化や価値を見失ったのでもういちどしっかり見直そうということである。

日本人として『日本の美』について知り、歴史を学びそこからあたらしいものを創造するといった姿勢を大切にしたいと思った本であった。
