　1980年代半ばから1990年代前半にかけて、社会思想社から『ウォーロック』というゲームブック専門雑誌が刊行されていました。
その『ウォーロック』誌の30号および31号に分割して掲載された書き下ろしのゲームブックが『送り雛は瑠璃色の』です。
　主人公は中学生という設定なので、前半はのんきな学園モノの雰囲気ですが、先に進むにつれて、ありふれた日常が前世からの因縁に侵されていきます。
そのストーリーの運びが見事で、読後には一冊の小説を読み終えたかのような満足感が得られます。
　思うに、この作品は従来のゲームブックに比べて「ゲーム」の部分よりも「ブック」の部分の占める割合が大きいのです。
正直なところ、ゲーム性の点では、それほど画期的とは思いません。
ですが、ストーリーや謎解きの部分において、他のゲームブックを遥かに凌駕しています。
また、各所に和歌や民話などを散りばめることにより、作品世界のイメージを膨らませるのに成功しています。
ゲームブックとしては特異な位置にあるといえますが、一つの完成形として評価されるべき作品だと思います。
　この文庫版には『送り雛は瑠璃色の』の他に、『ウォーロック』誌の12号に掲載された『顔のない村』と文庫用書下ろしの『夢草枕、歌枕』が収録されていますが、前者はファイティング・ファンタジーのルールを借りた中途半端なものですし（それでも、独特の怖さや不気味さを醸し出しているのはさすがです）、後者はかなり実験的な色合いが強いので、個人的には『送り雛は瑠璃色の』単体で文庫化してほしかったように思います。
　いずれにしても、私にとっては忘れえぬ、そして大切な一冊です。

ここに描かれているのはふたつのもの･･･
ありとあらゆる対比、並立がそこにある。
魂と骸、生者と死者、夢と現･･･。
難しいけど、最後まで読み解いていただきたい･･･

本書の主要登場人物は、中学校の「歴史部」に所属する４人組。


主人公の男以外は、少しお調子者で雑学に詳しい男と、知的で勝気な小動物系の
女の子、そして、ミステリアスな長い黒髪の美少女、といったキャラクター配置です。

歴史部という部活名といい、キャラの人物造形といい、
米澤穂信氏の《古典部》シリーズを彷彿とさせます。


米澤氏自身も「野性時代」の企画、「米澤穂信を作った『100冊の物語』」のなかの一冊
として、本書を挙げているので、モデルにしたと考えても見当違いではないと思います。
