音声学など全く知らない私に、この本は「音声学とは何ぞや」を教えてくれた。子音・母音などは本を見てもなかなか自分一人で発音出来るようにならないが、それでも一つ一つ丁寧に調音器官の動きを図解してあるので、参考には出来るはずである。また日本語音声を中心に書いてくれているところも、初心者にはわかりやすくありがたかった。私は斉藤氏の『日本語音声入門』と大学書林から発行されている小泉保氏の『音声学入門』を購入したが、斉藤氏の著書の方が、より入門という言葉にふさわしかったと思う。この本の最後には、斉藤氏がお勧め文献を挙げてくれているので、またそれに沿って音声学を勉強していくことも出来よう。
