一冊ものの国語辞典としては「広辞苑」が有名だが本辞典の方が使い勝手がよい。これは三省堂の辞典全体に言えるのだが、くだけた言葉や、メディア等では使われない言葉も収録されているのが良い。テレビや雑誌で見られない言葉だからこそ、辞書には載せる必要があるのだ。残念なのは同じ松村明が編んだ小学館の「大辞泉」がカラーなのに対し、こちらは２色刷な点である。だが内容本意で考えればこの辞書は相当使えると思う。

以前は広辞苑を第２版から使っていましたが、どうも語義解説がしっくりこなくて、新明解など別の辞書で調べなおしていました。書店で大辞林を読んでみると解説がわかりやすいので、今はもっぱら大辞林を使用。本、CDROM、電子ブックと３種類購入し職場、読書、自宅すべてで使っています。

いろいろな国語辞典を使ってきましたが、ひとつひとつの言葉の選択や目配り、意味の解説、豊富な類例など、いちばん信頼がおける国語辞典です。現代語と古典とのバランスもいちばんだと思います。この辞典に比べると、広辞苑など、耐用年数切れで時代遅れの感があります。
