本書は、Unicodeによる漢字の情報を得るための辞典で、いわゆるワープロ漢字字典ではない。なにしろ、読みや総画数で漢字を引くことはできないのだ。(部首索引はある)

本文はUnicode順にならんでおり、その漢字について、BUCSか否か、JIS/GB(中国)/CNS(台湾)/KSC(韓国)の文字コード、日本語やピンインの読み、異体字などが掲載されている。
また、UnicodeではUnificationによって、ある程度の字形の差が無視されているが、残念ながら、軽微とは言いがたい差がある漢字も統合されてしまっている。そのような漢字については、それぞれの字形が例示されており、実際の印刷物、特に日本語以外の印刷物をデータ化する際には大変参考になる。
ただ、残念なことに、(書名のとおり)対象は漢字のみで、約物や他の言語の文字は掲載されていない。欧文(基本ラテン)とかな、約物の一覧表があればより実用性が増すと思う。これらは漢字と違い、必要な情報も文字コードくらいだから、それほどのスペースも必要ないだろう。

このように本書は、漢字混じりのテキストデータを扱う専門家には必需品と言っても過言ではない内容だ。逆にそれ以外の方が活用することはむずかしいだろう。
