　三修社は「ダーリンは、○○人」という「国際結婚レポート＆エッセイ」シリーズを刊行していると思われます。本書はそのドイツ編。

　著者は74年生まれ。99年にドイツ人と結婚して最初はベルリン、そして今はミュンヘンで暮らしていて、これまでの5年のドイツ生活で見聞した異文化模様を綴っています。

　日本企業の社長秘書が本業という著者の文章は、けれんみのない実に素直で読みやすいものです。

　「ダーリン」についての記述は題名から想像させるほど多くはありません。しかし、取り上げられている内容はどれも興味深く、読んでいて飽きが来ません。また著者自身に「だから日本人はダメだ。そしてドイツ人はすばらしい」というドイツ礼賛的・被虐的国民根性がない点も好感が持てました。

　残念なことに写真の使い方が効果的ではありません。

　著者自身に写真家としての技量は全くありません。見せるべき部分が翳ってしまっていたり、焚いたフラッシュが被写体の中央で反射してしまったりという掲載写真が大半です。ドイツで食するルッコラの写真は誰かの影が写っていて肝心の対象がまるで見えません。じゃがいもグラタンの写真はピンぼけです。こうした欠陥写真を平気で掲載するのはこの本にお金を支払う読者に対して誠意がありません。

　また、掲載頁の内容と掲載写真との間に連関が見られない場合もあります。ファッシング（カーニバル）前の木曜日に会社では男性のネクタイをハサミで切り取るという風習を紹介した写真が205頁に掲載されていますが、この頁で取り上げているのは「日本人はドイツ社会でも日本人同士で群れることが多い」というまるで別のお話です。ネクタイ切りの風習は面白そうに見えるだけに、著者の体験談を含めてきちんと説明をすべきだったのではないでしょうか。
　著者はプロの文筆家ではないので、こういう点は三修社の編集者がきちんと指摘して導いていくべきです。

ドイツやドイツ人についてほとんど知識がなかったので
ドイツ人の気質やビールの種類などについて
いろんなことが新鮮で興味深かった。
ただ、ご主人との成り染めや遠距離結婚については
もう少しコンパクトにまとめて、その分を
ドイツでの日常生活について割いていたら
より充実した内容になったのではないかと
思いました。
