「帰る場所」の続編で、元々は同人誌で書かれた作品の加筆修正版です。
書き下ろしの「月命日」「明日は明日の」と一緒になっているのでかなり厚い一冊。

基本「帰る場所」を読んでいないと分かりずらいですね。
この本から入るなら、あとででもいいけど「帰る場所」を読むことをお勧めします。

「帰る場所」でまあ一応恋人同士となった喫茶店経営の玲一と財閥「香月」の西崎。
玲一は姪っ子の桃子を育てながら二人で暮らしている。
そんなある日、桃子は「香月」のトップである本当の祖父の誕生日パーティに呼ばれる。
同席した玲一は、そこで西崎の婚約の話、桃子の養子の話を聞いてしまう。

またもや玲一が桃子のことを一番に考えて自分を犠牲にして翻弄する。
その姿は切なくて、逆に西崎の存在が薄くなった感じがした。
西崎の非力さを垣間見たというか・・・。
最終的に西崎はがつんと行動を起こして、本人としては新しい道を切り開いていくのですが、ちょっと途中やきもきしました。

「隣に居るひと」単品よりも、一緒に同人誌で発表されていた「その後」「月の満ちるところ」の2作を合わせて一つのお話と考えて読むと、全体も納得がいきます。
「隣にいるひと」だけ読むと、やっぱり尻切れトンボ感が否めないかな。
