いわずと知れた直木賞受賞作。

ある日、突然、姿を消した花魁葛城。
何故？今どこにいるのか？それとも...？

吉原の廓周りの人々の証言を、
作者のこれまでの歌舞伎やら何やらの知識を生かして、
その生業や、生まれや育ちで書き分けていく。
その背景も見事に立ち上がり、自分が大門の中にいるかのようです。
まさにお見事！の一言。

吉原から花魁が一人消えた。
人を引きつける天賦の才を持ち、吉原一の花魁、
10年に一度、いや50年に一度の売れっ奴になるはずの頂点から、
忽然と消息を絶ち、誰もその行方を知らない・・・

吉原に不慣れな人物（自分では戯作者と途中で名乗るが、本当の正体は不明）が
聞き手となり、
花魁に関わりのある吉原の人間に花魁について、
あるいは吉原のしきたりについて語らせる。
果たして真相は知れるのか？

最後まで読めば、取材して回った人物の正体は明らかになるが、
花魁失踪の謎は解けたのか、解けなかったのか。

所詮はすべて真相は「藪の中」・・・という気がしないでもない。
でもそれがこの小説のマイナス点になるかというと
まったく違うんだなぁ、これが。

とにかく、一読をお勧めします！！

吉原ものが大好きな私にとって　とても楽しく一気に読めました。
花魁の失踪、という事件に関わった人々の語りで
物語は進んでいきますが、推理要素もある中
私には当時　見たことのないはずの吉原の情景が浮かぶような気がしました。

廓言葉は「ありんす」「わちき」などが有名ですが
私は「ざます」が廓言葉とは知らなかったので
なんだかすごく新しいものを発見したような嬉しさです。
話の中で「人を呼ぶざますよ」という
花魁の言い回しがなんだかとても可愛くって興味深く楽しかったです。

吉原の文化に興味がある方は読んで損はない本だと思います。
