不必要な性描写が多い最近の垣根であるが、
私はこの小説に限り、性描写もやむなしと思う。
それはこの小説の根源である「怒り」が、性と暴力を下敷きにしているからである。


ただし、多くのファンが垣根に求めているのは、クレイジーヘブンのようなものではなく、
ワイルドソウルやヒートアイランドのようなものではないのか。
また、それらが認められたからこその、
山本周五郎賞の中では異色作とも言える作品での受賞ではないか。


垣根が今の立ち位置にいることが残念でならない。
たとえ本人が望んでそうしているとしても。
いったい彼はどこを見ているのだろう。

ワイルドソウルでファンになり全作品は読みました。
本作は単行本が出たときに一部を立ち読みして、文庫が出てからで良いや、ってことで今般読みました。　いろいろとちょっと中途半端かな。ストーリーが徹底的にノワールに徹すれば良かったのに。

通勤電車で読んでいたが、セックス描写が結構長いので、さすがにちょっと隣を気にした。女性が読む場合は特に気をつけた方が良い。
性と暴力がテーマの一つだけれど、主人公の暴力衝動、怒りの源泉が今ひとつ腑に落ちなかったし、極端に言うと「なんでそこまでキレるかなあ」と感じてしまった。わざと「過剰感」を出しているのだろうけど読んでいて疲れた。その分、最後には主人公とともに「過剰」からの解放を感じたけれどね。
