短編集です。それぞれの作品の裏表紙には、昔話を短くまとめたものがついている。
この昔話と三浦しをんの作品を対比させてみると、すぐになるほどと思う作品もあり、深読みしてようやく繋がりがわかる物語もある。
読み進めていくうちに、昔話にこだわらなくても構わないこと、それよりももっと重要な伏線が引かれていることに気づき、この本は普通の短編集ではなく、たいへん凝った造りの連作短編集だとわかります。
なにも考えずに本を手に取って、ひとつひとつの作品を楽しんでから、もう一度表紙を眺めると、作者がなぜ「むかしのはなし」と名づけたのか余韻を楽しむことができる。

このように、一粒で三度楽しめる凝った構成にするのが、いいかどうかはわからない。
でも、作品ひとつひとつは小説として完成していて十分におもしろいから、昔話と対比しなくても、連作短編集としての仕上がりを意識しなくても大丈夫。

すべてを読んでいるわけではないが、他の三浦しをん作品とは一味違う作品であった。

連作短編はえもすれば、ただ単に登場人物がそれぞれの話で主役になったり、脇役になったりするだけのものが多いが、これはそうではない。こんな連作短編もあるのかとちょっと驚きをもって、読み終えた。

これが「連作」であるのに気づくのはこの本のタイトルの意味を理解するのと同じタイミングとなる。それぞれの章の冒頭に昔話が書かれているが、もちろんそれだけがこのタイトルの意味ではない。

一応レビューとして書いているのでネタばらしをしないで書くのは難しい作品である。

他の三浦作品を読んで気に入っている方々には「ダーク三浦しをん」を読む覚悟がある場合にのみ読んでほしいと思う。

　６編の短編と中編１編で構成された書き下ろし作品。１話目の「ラブレス」と最後の「懐かしき川べりの町の物語せよ」の内容が呼応して、完結性を高めている。
　昔話のパロディーではない。昔話にインスパイアされたオリジナル・ストーリーである。「入江は緑」のおだやかなあきらめのような日常が、あとで別な意味を持って胸に迫ってくる。「生きる」ということは、誰かが書いていたように、つまり死ぬまで生きるということなのだ。…読後の、胸に沈む思いをうまく表現できない。
