　他のレビュアーの方と同じ書き出しになってしまうが、映画が好きである、当然、映画について書かれた文章を読むのも好きになる。映画と言うのは、あらゆる芸術表現の中で、それに触れる者が最も受動的に感受出来るエモーショナルな総合エンタテインメントであるから、映画について何か書くと言う行為は、評論家、ジャーナリストに止まらず、イラストレーター、エッセイスト、タレント、デザイナーから我々一般人まで昔からあらゆる分野の人々で行われてきた。ところが、その中で、作家が映画について言及している事は、映画好きが多いにも拘らず、同じ創作活動に携わっている事からくる配慮なのか、意外なほど少ない。そんな中、沢木耕太郎は、新聞や雑誌紙上で、映画について積極的に語っている希有な作家である。しかも、そのどれもが納得させられるのだ。映画の登場人物の内面を掘り下げ、洞察する力は、ルポルタージュ作家として、絶えず“生身の人間”と“人生”を凝視してきた沢木の真骨頂だ。映画と言うフィルターを通しながら、「ありえたかも知れない」あるいは「使われなかった」人生を解析しながら、読み手にも、自身のケースを夢想させたり、思いを馳せたりする事を喚起させる魅力を持った１冊。論じられている映画はマイナーな作品が殆どだが、ＤＶＤやヴィデオ化されているモノは多い。

映画好きで映画評論もよく読む。しかし、映画評論を生業にしている人たちの映画評論はたいてい面白くない。読み手としては、その映画が面白いのか、面白くないのかを知りたい。しかし、その欲求に答えてくれる映画評論は少ない。映画評論家の宿命かもしれないが、あまりハッキリ書くと制作会社や配給会社との関係がまずくなるから評論の中身が曖昧になってしまうのかと勘ぐりたくなってしまう。その点、沢木耕太郎は自分が好きな作品しか書いていない。ノンフィクション・ライターである沢木にとって、映画評論は趣味的な要素がかなりあると思われる。そうしたスタンスで書かれた沢木の映画評論は独特で、いつも読むのを楽しみにしている。とくに、その分析的記述は極めて個性的だ。観る前に読んでも参考になるし、観た後読んでも面白い。月に一回、新聞と雑誌に掲載される映画評論をいつも楽しみにしている。こんな映画評論を書く人は沢木以外にいない、と思う。

沢木氏にしてはめずらしい映画に関するコラム集です。
評論家とは違う目線で映画を見ており、楽しく読むことができました。
ハリウッドだけではなく、世界のいろんな映画について書かれており、それぞれの国での筆者の実体験と重ねあわせて書かれている部分もあります。
それぞれの国の文化的特徴も知ることができました。
映画を批評するのではないので、読む側も気を張らずに読むことができました。
