中世の日本か、時代錯誤も甚だしい昔の世界を舞台にしていながら、ぞっとするようなリアリティのある話だった。
本当に人間は、食べ物が無くなると、こんな風に悲惨になるものなのだろうか？
飢えていない頃は家族愛や恋愛、友情などに結ばれていた人間たちが、飢えていくにつれ疑心暗鬼の目になり、他人のものを盗み、陥れようとする。
自分が最も信頼している人でさえ、敵へと変わっていく恐怖。
人間が人間であるための一番大切な部分が、飢えのために徐々に失われ、剥ぎ取られていくさまが、克明に描かれていく。
その中で、最初から人間の愛を与えられなかった主人公アシュラだけが、人間的感情に無知ゆえに、本能の赴くまま人肉を食らい、着の身着のまま生きている。
しかしやがてそのアシュラも、自分を気にかけてくれる法師や、父、若狭などの人間と出会い、
最後に自分にひどい仕打ちをした母との再会をすることで、ようやく人間的な感情の存在に気づいていく。
しかしそれは逆に、アシュラに自らの呪われた過去を思い出させ、「生まれてこなければよかった」という哀しい結論を彼に抱かせるのであった…。

全体を通して、救いようも無く暗い物語。
人間の愛情は、飢えの前にこんなにも脆く崩れ去ってしまうものなのだろうか？と真剣に考えてしまうことは必至です。名作だと思います。

「アシュラ」は今まで4回ほど単行本になっています。 立風書房(B6版)昭和40年代、朝日ソノラマ(新書版)昭和50年代、日本文芸社(A5版)80年代、ぱる出版(ハードカバー)90年代 そして、今回の文庫版、本としては、一番貧弱でサイズが小さい。大型サイズでの再刊を望みます。この作品が発表されたのは、昭和45年の少年マガジン。「巨人の星」や「あしたのジョー」が連載されていた頃です。 完結編は昭和56年6月8日号の、週刊少年ジャンプに読み切りで発表になりました。 この作品は、2009年になって、ようやく、「銭ゲバの娘プーコ・アシュラ完結編」(青林工藝舎刊)に収録されました。「アシュラ」は、2009年1月、連ドラになった「銭ゲバ」の延長線上にある作品です。 極限状態を設定するために、中世の飢饉の時代を選んだに過ぎません。 テーマは重いので、ジャンプ系列の作品が当たり前だと思っている人にとっては、かったるい作品かもしれませんが、ハングリーな人にとっては、心に染み入る作品でしょう。 そして、この作品はよくも悪くも、マンガの神様手塚治虫には絶対書けない作品です。 マンガというより、文学に近い作品です。 「画」だけがうまい小器用な最近のマンガに不満を感じている方は、是非ともお読み下さい。

私は大人になってからこの作品を読んでよかったです。
冒頭の描写から、頭がおかしくなってしまうような凄惨な
シーンの連続で、子供だったら変なふうにのめり込んでしまう
危険があるのじゃないかと思います。

全てを読み終わって、最初の妊娠した母親のところを読むと、
涙がでてきます。生きるために半狂乱になって人肉を食いながらも
お腹の我が子、生まれ出た我が子を守ろうとする姿に
美しさすら感じました。自分も母親になってみたいと感じました。

アシュラの苦悩は理解できるものの、憎み過ぎだと感じました。
恋もし、友達もできるのに、恨みもない人たちを殺し続ける
行為に共感しきれませんでした。

全体的には、古いものだとは思えないほど鮮烈な作品で
絵も（単純だからこそ？）高い水準だと思いました。
とくに女の人の体がよく描けてて、好きなんだろうなと思いました。
