松子の不幸はますます容赦がなくなってきます。
私はこの小説は「負のおとぎ話」だと思っています。シンデレラストーリーに幸福のゴールがあるように、この物語にもちゃんと不幸のゴールがあります。こうなるより他ないんです。これはそういう物語なのです。しかし、それは決して映画「ダンサーインザダーク」や「フランダースの犬」のような、外的環境に翻弄される「弱いものいじめ」ではなく、すべては松子自身の責任において堕ちていくところが熱いのです。
ミステリー小説などでは、しばしば賢明な若い女性の登場人物が、一条の光を投げかける存在として描かれますが、ここでは、松子の甥の笙の彼女である明日香という女の子がその役割をしているように思います。
おそらく松子とは正反対の明るい人生を送るであろう明日香に、本来真面目で努力家な一面をもっている松子が歩めなかった人生を重ねてしまいました。
「嫌われ松子」は一生を終えることで、「愛され松子」になったのでしょうか。
松子が実家に帰ったとき、子供だった甥っ子の笙に出会う場面と（笙はそれを覚えていない）、松子の最期の場面は、少しせつないです。
賢く生きるって実は簡単なことで、体と情で生きることのほうがずっとずっと大変なのかもしれませんね。
それにしても、この文庫、解説がよくないです。こんな視点で解釈してしまったら、読後のテンションがぐ〜んと下がってしまいますよ。

下巻に入って、ほとんどnon-stopで読み切りました。なのにこの後味の悪さ。これほどまでに激しい転落の人生の結末、そんな女性がどうしてこんなどうってことない人に殺されてしまったのでしょう。ただ愛し愛されることだけを望んで生きてきたのに、どこをどうくぐっても彼女には女神が微笑んでくれない。二巻を通して、松子がぐんと身近なものになりました。途中龍洋一と聖書の出会いが、なんとなく不自然なものに思えたんだけれど。

　本の表題からは想像がつかぬほど、シリアスな話。。。松子の転落人生が甥の「笙」の調査と交互に描かれ、最後に一つにまとまる。松子のその最期はあまりのむなしさに絶句してしまう。終盤は生気を失った彼女がやる気を取り戻した矢先だっただけに悲しい。
　でもこの出来事を通じて「笙」が成長する様子や、松子自身の一生懸命に何かを信じて、すがって生きていく姿は心を打つ。
　決してスカッとする本ではないが、読んで損はない。
