最初にタイトルを見たとき、どんな性格ブスの物語なのだろう思った。確かに教師時代は体裁と自己の評価を保つことだけに支配された高慢な女だった。
ところが窃盗事件に端を欲し家を飛び出したところから愛を希求する対象が父親から男へ変わる。セックス・ドラッグ・バイオレンス、揚げ句の果てには男を殺して服役する。
転落し続ける松子の人生。殴られても裏切られても引きずられても愛を乞う女。女であれば共感できる部分もあるのではないだろうか。それ以外の方法論を知らないというところに人格の歪みを感じるが、それがまた松子の魅力でもある。
著者が描きたかったのは打算や理性で幸福を掴み取る女ではない。まるで幼い子供のように泣きながら盲目的に愛を乞う女だ。例えバカだと言われようが、松子をそうさせるのは大人たちが失ってしまった純真な魂に他ならないからだ。
一方で松子の生涯を紐解いていくうちに大人へと成長を遂げる笙と明日香の視点も、若い世代に向けたメッセージを含んでいて素晴らしい。松子の視点で描写される過去、笙の視点で綴られる現在。ページをめくるごとに時間軸が近づけていく手法が読者をどんどん物語の中に引き釣り込んでいく。

松子は愚か、松子は自堕落、松子は短絡的、松子は哀れ、松子は運がない・・・なのに、松子に共感を覚えてしまう部分が否めないのは、私が女だからか、それとも松子と同じような要素が自分にあるからなのか。

これは負のおとぎ話です。
めくるめくシンデレラストーリーなんて滅多にないように、この物語のような不幸で悲惨な人生もそうそうあるものではありません。そういう意味でこの小説は、登場人物も含め、とても「空想物語然」としているとも言えるので、安心して読むことができます。映画がファンタジックな発想で作られているらしい点もわかるような気がします。
しかし、男性作家の作品であるのに、ときおりぎょっとするほど女性の心理が巧みに描かれている点には少し感心しました。とくに松子の、父親と妹に対する思いや葛藤には、同じ経験があるわけでもないのに妙に感情移入してしまえるから不思議です。
冗長にならず、先を読ませる勢いがあるのはミステリ作家らしい著者の力量なんでしょうか。

タイトルと映画化にあたっての中谷美紀のコメントを見て思わず購入した。だって、あの中谷美紀が『松子を演じるために女優になったのかも・・』と、言わしめているのだから。どんな話が待ち受けているのかと読み進むうち、『こりゃ！下巻も買わなきゃ』と、慌てて本屋に走ったほどだ。この本に書かれてる話は今を生きている人達みんなの中にいる人格の一つだと思う。あなたは今に満足していますか？誰かを愛した事がありますか？誰かに愛された事がありますか？正直に生きてますか？人はみな同じように産声を上げて生まれてきても　一つ、たった一つの歯車が合わなくなった時から思いもよらない方向へ行くものです。
輪廻も運命もあるかもしれないけれど、変えるも自分、落ちるも自分
。何に幸せを見出せるかだけで生き方は変えられるものだと思う。　　松子があなたの反面教師になってくれるはずです。
