裁判官・梶間は一家惨殺事件で起訴された武内に無罪を言い渡す。数年後、大学教授となった梶間の前に姿を現した武内は、隣家に引っ越して来る。果たして偶然か？　母親の介護を手伝うなど親切な武内は、徐々に家庭に入り込むが、それにつれ、家庭の崩壊が始まる。そこに惨殺事件の被害者の家族が現れて・・・。梶間一家は、「火の粉」を振り払うことができるのか。
読み始めは、「十三階段」の裁判官版を思わせるが、徐々に「黒い家」や「ミザリー」に似た、「次に何が起こるのか」という恐怖に支配され、ページを捲る手か止まらなくなる。ミステリーの中でもホラー色の強い作品である本作は、評判を呼んだ前作「虚貌」を遙かにしのぐできばえで、徹夜本となった。

　「犯人に告ぐ」ど俄然注目株となった雫井修介さんですが、本作「火の粉」は私的には「犯人に告ぐ」よりも完成度は高いと思います。
　自分が無罪判決を下した元裁判官梶間の隣家に越してくる男、武内。彼が越してきて少しづつ身の回りに異変がおき始める展開の描きこみが凄く自然で巧い。展開が凄く自然なので、リアリティに富んでおり、読む進めば進むほど本当に恐ろしくなる展開に目が話せません。
　文庫版で600ページ近くありますが、雫井さんの筆力は高くとてもわかりやすくさくさく読めるので、あっという間に読める一冊です。
　ただ家族劇なので、視点を一人に絞らずそのつど家族の一人の目線で物語が進むので、元裁判官が主人公ではないのでそこのところはチェックしておいてください。
　この文庫のあとがきにも書かれていますが、雫井さんは女性心理の描きこみが巧い。この物語では尋恵、雪見の二人の心情が特に巧く描きこまれています。これを読んで共感できる女性は多いのではないでしょうか。

最高におもしろい。
息つく暇もない。ページをくるのももどかしい。
物語がどのように帰結するのか、気になって知りたくてジリジリしてしまう。

元裁判官・梶間勲の隣家に越してきた男・武内。
二年前、勲は殺人で起訴された武内に、無罪の判決を下していた。
恨みを買ういわれは何もない。だが梶間家の周辺で、次々と不可解な事件が起こり始める。
にこやかで親切で情の厚い武内。それは彼の仮面なのか？本当の彼はどんな人間なのか？勲の下した判決は間違っていたのか？それとも？真実は？？

武内のキャラが秀逸。
人間の複雑さ、ひずみ、脆さ、危うさ、そして普遍性をこんなに体現した人物は今まで誰も書かなかったんじゃないかと思える。うまい。怖い。

梶間家の面々の人物も、深く掘り下げて描かれる。
特に義母を介護する尋恵の心のわだかまりと、武内に対する不安と疑心を理解してもらえない雪見のじれったさには、ものすごく共感してしまう。その心理描写だけでも読みごたえがある。俊郎の脳天気なお気楽さには本気で腹が立つし。

・・・のトリックが暴かれるシーンがよい。情景が映像となって目に浮かぶ。
開くふすま。パシーン、パシーンと響く音。俯瞰するカメラ。勲のセリフ。解ける謎。
鳥肌がたつくらいうまい。感嘆する。

ラストはアメリカ映画的で、まあちょっと作りすぎの感は否めない。けれどよくぞここまで引っぱってくれた、とも思える。

登場人物のリアルさ、たくみな物語構成、奇抜ではないのにあっと驚くトリック、迫力のラストシーン、そして考えさせれるテーマ。傑作のあらゆる要素を満たしていると思う。
