「これは小説なんだ…」何度もそう思いながら読み進めました。

この小説はタイを舞台に幼児が売春宿に売り飛ばされ、挙げ句生きたまま臓器売買されるというショッキングな内容と並行して、それを阻止しようとする現地NPO団体の苦悩を描いたものです。
あまりにも後味の悪い結末とともに途中何度も憤怒の涙を流した私は、気になって他の方（有名無名を問わず）のレビューも読んでみました。
大体が「取材不足」や「リアリティ不足」などとありましたが、ルポルタージュではないにしろ、ここまで肉迫した文章を小説として世に出した梁 石日氏に私は拍手を送りたい気持ちでいっぱいです。

なぜなら、フィクション、ノンフィクションの違いはあれど、火のないところに煙は立たないのです。
取材不足といわれる所以となった現実味に乏しいと言われる文脈も、あえて『小説』という仮面をかぶせたら普段問題意識のない市井の人にも提起できると感じたからです。
それは普段平和の中に身を委ねた私自身が、作中涙も枯れ果てたこども達に魂を重ね合わせられた瞬間だったからです。

本書を読むということは、まるで自分の中に潜む悪魔と向き合うことのようでもあり、手に取るまでにも相当の勇気が要った。人間はここまで残酷になれるものなのか？野獣以下の描写の嵐には悪夢にうなされるほどだった。私達があまりにも無知だったこと、メディアが機能していないこと、全てが狂い出していること・・その闇の深さに今、気の遠くなるような息苦しさを感じている。何も知らずに、知ろうとせずに、海外の繁華街で、チャラチャラとお金をバラ撒いていたかつての自分が恥ずかしい。まずは「知ること」から最初の一歩が踏み出せると信じて、今後もこの問題に関心を持っていきたい。

前半のタイでの人身売買・売春の実態の凄まじいばかりの描写は著者の真骨頂ともいうべきもの。

貧困がひと一人の命の価値を限りなく軽くする。

ただ後半の展開は微妙。犠牲になる子供を救おうとする主人公の日本人ＮＧＯ職員の葛藤。

根底の原因が貧困である以上、ＮＧＯ活動の対症療法が問題の根治には繋がらないという著者・読者の共通認識があるからどうリアリティを出そうとしても偽善臭が消せない、と思うのはあまりにもうがった見方でしょうか。

一人や二人の子供を救ったところでどうなる、というメッセージは本書でも繰り返し発せられていますが、わたしは中途半端な希望を見出すような展開は不要、興醒めであると思いました。
