一年の半分は豪雪のため雪に埋もれる生活をする新潟県二田村。そこで産声を上げた角栄は６人の姉妹に囲まれて育つ。幼少期より吃音に悩まされるものの、克服への努力は並大抵のものではない。高等小学校卒業後、土木仕事を始めたころから彼の運命はすごいスピードで好転する。
私の記憶の中の田中角栄といえば「まあこの~」と加藤茶が真似をしていたものが先ず浮かんでくる。次はロッキード事件の汚職政治家。
この本を読んで、彼について簡単には語れないな、という思いが強くなった。
人一倍の努力家であり、腰が低く、愛嬌がある。記憶力に優れ、約束は絶対に守る。
上巻は、田中角栄の生まれたときから、幼少期、土木作業員、軍隊生活、社長角栄そして政治家。「しだいにくろずんだ策略のくまどりを宿すようになって」小佐野賢治との関係が深くなっていくところまでです。

数ある角栄論をうまくまとめてはいるものの、著者自身の独自の視点に欠け、面白みがない。角栄の元秘書、早坂茂三の本の方が読ませる。角栄に関する概要を手早く知るとともに、角栄に関するどのような参考文献があるかを知るための手がかりには有効かもしれない。

本書は歴史小説の巨匠、津本陽氏の作品だが、小説というよりもドキュメントといった方が正しい作品である。そして今まで様々な者に書かれてきた“田中角栄”という人物についてのまとめ的な要素が強い。文章中に参考文献からの引用文が多数出てくるが、すっきりとまとまっているのはやはり筆者の筆力、構成力のたまものであろう。故に“田中角栄”に対し、新しい定義をしめしたということではなく、あくまでも読みやすくまとめたものと言えよう。しかし、そこは津本氏の作品である。筆者の“田中角栄”に対する思い、そして現在までの他の政治家との比較は、最後は寂しい末路を迎えた天才政治家に対し、かなり愛情のこもったものとなっている。ぜひ、“田中角栄”をリアルタイムで感じた世代もそうでない世代も読んでもらいたい一冊だ。
