5.0 out of 5 stars 常識語だけど語源や由来は知らないでしょ。, 2003/10/26
幻冬舎からは「教養が試される日本語」という本も出ている。今回はその本と比較することによってこの本を評価しよう。「教養-」の方は掲載語が渋く、使いごたえのありそうな言葉ばかりだった。ただしその本には世相批判をするための盾としての日本語解説の向きがあり、語源の解説が杜撰であり、日本語解説本としてはお粗末な限りであった。間違った解説も多く、金を返せと言いたくなったくらいである。

そんなことがあってから、日本語本は慎重に選ぶようになった。そんな中、この「常識-」を見つけたのだ。手に取ると「幻冬舎」とある。嫌な予感。開いてみる。項目のつけ方まで一緒だ。導入、言葉説明、落ちという形式、項目の下には「どういう意味か？」などという小見出しが書いてあるのも一緒だ。小見出しには特に苛立ったものだ。

が、である。これは素晴らしい。なんでこんなにいいんだろう。着目している用語が日常使う範囲であり、ともすれば語源を知らないものを選択しているからかもしれない。身近なところに発見がある嬉しさがある。思わず「へぇー」と言ってしまうものばかりなのがよい。小見出しには相変わらずイライラするが、それは編集者が悪いのであって著者を貶めることではないだろう。そして、世相をグチった「教養-」の著者に対して、世相に対して軽く皮肉る「常識-」の方が読んでいて心地がよい。文章も掛け言葉の妙味を出して、読む人を楽しませることを心得ている。

となれば残るは、言葉の意味や由来が間違っていないか、である。大方大丈夫である。言いたいことがあってそのために言葉を選び出した感のある「教養-」に対して、「常識-」ははじめに言葉ありき、で飽きさせないように作っている。下調べもちゃんとしているし、語源が曖昧な時は断定を避ける表現で書いている。明らかに団扇が揚がるのは「常識-」の方だ。

そう言えば、「常識-」を買おうと思って間違えて「教養-」を買ったんじゃなかったかな、と思ってしまったが、この機会にこの価格で買えたので、損した気がしないでよかった。みなさんはくれぐれも間違えないように。ここアマゾンで買えば間違いありませんが。ここの価格も定価より圧倒的に安く、買う価値ありですよ。

内容が時代遅れ。有名な先生が書いた本らしいが解説の信憑性にかける。
値段が張らないので持っていても悪くはないかも。
