父親と牧場、そして「天国への階段」を一緒に上ることを約束した最愛の恋人亜木子をも奪われ、失意の元に北海道を後にし、上京した柏木圭一郎。26年の歳月がたち、実業家として財をなした柏木は、彼からすべてを奪った江成への復讐劇を開始する。しかし、心ならずも片棒を担ぐ羽目になった犯罪が原因で、人生の歯車が狂い始めてくる。中巻では家のために自分を捨てた亜木子を26年たっても恨みきれない柏木と、26年間柏木への罪の意識を持ち続けた亜木子が、絵笛で劇的に再会し、下巻に突入する。

下巻では、柏木の復讐の行方と、一方桑田らによる捜査が交互に描かれる。そして、柏木の息子と娘の存在を本人が知ることとなり・・・。

文庫化に伴い、数年ぶりに再読したが、やはりページをめくる手を止めることができず、特に下巻は一気に読み終えてしまった。

しかしながら、本作の結末については賛否両論あるように思う。私自身は、もう少し別の終わり方を期待していた一人である。「傷ついた葦」は「天国の階段」を誰と登ることができるのか。最後の10数ページは、ちょっと力業がすぎないか？もう少しページを割いてもよいし、別の終わり方でもよいのではないか？という意見を私以外にも抱く人はいるのではないだろうか。しかし、このような感想を持つこと自体、本作に引き込まれた証拠かもしれない。いずれにせよ読んで損のない作品である。

ボリュームがあったけど、上中下と三冊一気に読み終えました。
大切な人に裏切られた柏木と、最近妻と別れた自分を少し重ねつつ読んでいたのですが、復讐って多分、誰の為にもならないんですよね。復讐を達成しても、そこには失望しか残らないんだろうな。

人を恨む気持ちって、多くの人が感じたことがあると思いますが、それはマイナスにしかならないんだと思います。
それなら、その気持ちを、見返してやろう、今よりもっと素晴らしい自分になろうって、プラスの力に変えないといけないんですよね。

生きていく上で理不尽に思うことも沢山ある。それでも人のせいにしないで、身から出た錆だと思って、自分を磨いていきたいと思います。

証拠固めの段階に入った桑田の捜査も、柏木が成し遂げようとする計画も、時間との戦いになる。そして、一馬と柏木の腹心・児玉の動向が大きな鍵を握り、先の見えない展開となる。桑田の執念は実るのか。そして柏木が成し遂げようとしたことは…。

上巻を読み始めた頃は、ハードボイルドと思っていた作品なのだが、エピローグは完全な純愛小説である。それも愚直なまでの純愛と言っていいと思う。あまりにも意外な展開に、不覚にも涙が…。そして、やり切れなさの残る余韻が何時までも尾を引く。近年まれに見るすばらしく質の高い作品である。
