父親と牧場、そして最愛の恋人をも奪われ、失意の元に北海道を後にし、上京した柏木圭一郎。26年の歳月がたち、実業家として財をなした柏木は、彼からすべてを奪った江成への復讐劇を開始する。しかし、財をなすために犯した罪が、思わぬ形で追求をうけることになり、柏木自身も追いつめられていく。

中巻では、家のために自分を捨てた亜木子を26年たっても恨みきれない柏木と、26年間柏木への罪の意識を持ち続けた亜木子が、絵笛で劇的に再会する。一方桑田らによる捜査が徐々に柏木の元に迫る。

2001年はじめに出版された本作品、話題を呼びベストセラーとなり、日本テレビ系列でドラマ化もされたが、年末のこのミスで15位、文春で20位と、評価は今ひとつであった。
しかしながら、私個人にとっては、「模倣犯」「邪魔」に続くベスト3であった。

なにぶんにも量が多く、一気に読むというわけにはいかないが、復讐劇に恋愛劇も絡まり、ページをめくる手が止められなくなる。

本作品のポイントは「血のつながり」と「タイミング」である。ほんの小さなタイミングのずれが、いくつか重なると、人生は周りの人をも引き込んで、予想し得ない方向に進んでいく。そして、天国への階段を誰と上ることになるのだろうか？

中巻はストーリー展開ももちろんだが、心の揺れの描写が秀逸である。孤独と絶望の淵に追いつめられて復讐を誓った柏木でも、愛情や憎悪を自由にひねり出すことは出来ない。もし彼が、冷酷非情に徹することが出来たのなら、この作品は単なる復習譚に終わっていただろう。しかし、柏木の復習劇は、当初描いていたのとは違う方向に向かっていく。一方で、執念の捜査を続けていた桑田は、事件の全貌をほぼ掴む。また、亜木子の抱えていた重大な秘密も明らかになり、先を読まずにいられなくなる展開が連続する中巻である。
