父親と牧場、そして最愛の恋人をも奪われ、失意の元に北海道を後にし、上京した柏木圭一郎。26年の歳月がたち、実業家として財をなした柏木は、彼からすべてを奪った江成への復讐劇を開始する。しかし、財をなすために犯した罪が、思わぬ形で追求をうけることになり、柏木自身も追いつめられていく。

2001年はじめに出版された本作品、話題を呼びベストセラーとなり、日本テレビ系列でドラマ化もされたが、年末のこのミスで15位、文春で20位と、評価は今ひとつであった。
しかしながら、私個人にとっては、「模倣犯」「邪魔」に続くベスト3であった。

なにぶんにも量が多く、一気に読むというわけにはいかないが、復讐劇に恋愛劇も絡まり、ページをめくる手が止められなくなる。

本作品のポイントは「血のつながり」と「タイミング」である。ほんの小さなタイミングのずれが、いくつか重なると、人生は周りの人をも引き込んで、予想し得ない方向に進んでいく。そして、天国への階段を誰と上ることになるのだろうか？

上巻では、柏木の復讐劇が始まる一方で、思いがけない血のつながりが明らかになってくる。

たしかにミステリーとしての弱点、冗長さ、など欠点をあげつらうことは簡単にできる。しかし、完璧に作られた作品などは存在しないし、綿密なものが感動を誘うことにはならない。さまざまな意見はあるだろうが、これはいまの日本のミステリー界が無くした世界を体現してみせた大傑作であることは間違いない。それにしても幻冬舎は見せ方がうまい。そのふたつに対して、星５つ。読んで損はない。

上巻の半ばあたりから、グイグイと引き込まれるように一気に読んでしまいました。絶望の淵でなお一条の光を見出したいと願う登場人物の感情がひしひしと伝わってきました。魂の底から揺さぶられるような経験をさせてくれる小説、読んだ後は自分を取り巻く日常の世界がやや霞んで見えるような、そんな読み応えのある小説に、久しぶりに出会えました。

しかし・・・最後のエピローグの部分だけは不要なのでは・・・？
せっかくこれだけ説得力のある展開で描ききったのだから、その後の審判は読者の想像に委ねてもよかったのではと、少々残念。
