下巻でも、先を読まずにいられなくなるストーリー展開と、そこに絡む人物描写が秀逸である。しかし、ここで用いられているトリック(?)には納得がいかない。これを良しとするなら、何でも可能になってしまう。また、“彼”の正体を見破ったり、接触した人たちがいたにもかかわらず、あのような結末を迎えたことも納得できない。エンタテインメントとしては申し分ないと言えるが、やはり最低限の整合性は持たせて欲しい。そのような訳で、上巻は☆5つだが下巻は☆3つとする。

「火の粉」で、話題を集める作者の2001年に発行された単行本の文庫化。

本作品は、21年前に起こった放火殺人事件に端を発した復讐劇である。作品を通じてのキーワードは「復讐」と「顔貌」。

21年前に美濃加茂でおきた放火殺人事件。共犯者に騙され、主犯として懲役を務めた荒が出所したことをきっかけに、相次いで当時の共犯者が殺害される。21年前から荒は主犯ではないと疑っていた刑事滝中は、荒を重要参考人として追いかける。というのが上巻のストーリーである。下巻では、予想外の出来事が起こり、捜査は難航する。最初の殺人事件で目撃された荒、そして二件目の殺人事件で残された荒の指紋。真犯人は荒ではないのか？

文庫化に当たり、１年半ぶりに本作品を再読した。二度読んでも、本作品のトリッ!クはあまりにも力業すぎるという印象をうけた。実際、本当にこのようなことが可能なら、今後のミステリーにおいて、アリバイや証拠が成立しなくなってしまうのでは・・・・。誰にでもできるということではないのだろうが、どこまで信じていいのかと、余計なことを考えてしまった。

しかしながら、このことを除いても、十分に読む価値があるミステリーだと思う。本書を購入される方は、あっという間に上巻を読み終えるので、上下巻を同時に購入することをお勧めする。

本作品は、文春の2001年度のベスト10で24位にランキングされた。発売が9月でなければ、もっと高い評価が得られたのでは、と考えている。

推理小説として読むなら「最悪」、サスペンス物として読むなら「まぁまぁ」です。
推理物として読み出してしまった私には、途中で方向転換することができず、最後で「えっ？これ何?」で終わってしまいました。
書き手の力量で、一見そのようには見えないのですが、物語の節目節目が偶然に支配されており、これに気づいてしまうと読み手がしらけてしまいました。すごく筆に力のある著者なので、この作品は残念です。
