「火の粉」で、話題を集める作者の2001年に発行された単行本の文庫化。

本作品は、21年前に起こった放火殺人事件に端を発した復讐劇である。作品を通じてのキーワードは「復讐」と「顔貌」。

21年前に美濃加茂でおきた放火殺人事件。共犯者に騙され、主犯として懲役を務めた荒が出所したことをきっかけに、相次いで当時の共犯者が殺害される。21年前から荒は主犯ではないと疑っていた刑事滝中は、荒を重要参考人として追いかける。というのが上巻のストーリーである。作品は、滝中の娘・朱音、最後に残った共犯者・湯本をからめ、テンポよく進み、とにかくすすめられる。
「火の粉」同様、徹夜本である。
本作品は、文春の2001年度のベスト10で24位にランキングされた。発売が9月でなければ、もっと高い評価が得られたのでは、と思うと残念である。文庫化をきっかけに、多くの方々にこの作品に触れて頂きたいと思う。

雫井氏を知ったのは「火の粉」からであったが、
そのときから警察小説系にはまりつつあり、横山秀夫などを
好んで読んでいた私にはまさに求めていたものを
兼ね備えている読み物を提供してくれる人物だった。
この後、犯人に告ぐを読み、舌を巻いていたのもつかの間、
この虚貌である。
彼は人物描写や掘り下げがとても丁寧だ。
その点は宮部みゆきの「理由」や「模倣犯」などに
通じるところがある。ひとりひとりに多くのページ数を
割く。そのページが後のストーリー展開に大きな影響を
もたらすのだ。読む私たちは感情移入も深くなる。
そのあたりが彼の狙いなのだろうか。
この本も、いろんな人間が複雑に絡み合っている。
少し難を言えば、この惨殺事件の犯人一味が、
事件を追う、余命いくばくもない中高年刑事の娘と
つきあっているところだろうか。
そこまで世間は狭くない気がするのだが。。
しかしながらそれを差し引いても一読に値する
読み応えのある本である。
惨殺事件の犯人を、24年経ってからまた惨殺した
ものは一体誰か、命を賭けて犯人を捕らえようとする
刑事の思いは叶うのか。
どの登場人物のいろんな側面から見ても
常に先を読み進めたくさせる手腕には
天才と言う他ない。

ミステリーとして以上に人間の心の弱い部分をストレートに描いた作品であったと思います。
顔に大やけどの痕があるために看護師になれなかった少年、顔の痣をカバーマークで隠している刑事の心や
アイドルとして自分の顔に失望してしまった女性。
顔って何？作品は一貫してその提起を僕に突きつけてきました。
そして作品の中には多くの言葉に溢れていた。老刑事が、姉さんの話で
「個人の戦争はこうやって終わっていくんだろうな」とつぶやいたシーンが、
僕の中で最も印象に残ています。
