この本をホラーと呼ぶのか、SFと呼ぶのか、あるいは心理小説と呼ぶのか、、、それはわかりません。
しかし、いつもながら、この恩田陸という人が、
言葉を縦横無尽に使って、
人間の中に埋もれている、しかも、｢名づける」ことのむずかしい
漠然とした感覚を描くことのできる作家だということがこの本を読むとよくわかります。

逆にいえば、ストーリーやプロットは完璧に仕上げられた外箱のようなもので、
本当においしいのは中身のお菓子、つまり、彼女の言葉によって織り上げられる、私たち人間の心や体、特に、皮膚に近いところにある感覚をともに共感する楽しみなのです。

私たちの記憶の中に、切れ切れに残っている小さな不安や、頼りなさ、孤独感、そんなものを、まるで、繊細な夏の和菓子のように透明に甘く可憐に手のひらに載せて見せてくれる、、、そんな作品です。

先入観は禁物ですが、ただ、この本を読むとき季節だけはよく選んで。
ベストなのは、梅雨時です。

世界中が、湿気をたっぷり含んで、ぬれているようなときに読むと、、、
ぞくぞくっとしますよ。

残念ながら、私は夏に読みましたが、
ちょうど、どんよりと湿気が高い一日を過ごし、夜半から激しい雨が降り始めた中で読みました。
グッド！でしたよ。

叙景詩としては全く素晴らしい。このような空気感を持つ作品は滅多に無い。ただ、その素晴らしい叙景にストーリーが上質に絡み合ってるとは言えず、通俗的に例えると「麺が全くダメな素晴らしいスープのラーメン」。一読の損はないが。

ゾクッとします。
僕がこれを読んだのは台風で豪雨と風が窓を叩く真夜中でした。最悪なんだか最高なんだか、この本を読むシチュエーションとしてはおあつらえ向きです。ザアザアと降る音の中に何かが近づいてくる音がしないか？誰かがベッドの後ろにいないか？雨の、水の気配がしないか？誰かの吐息が――
怖すぎです。

「六番目の小夜子」然り「球形の季節」然り、「形容しがたい感情」を描かせたら恩田陸さんに敵う人はそうそういないのではないでしょうか。それを味わうためにでもこれは読むに値する作品だと思います。読むうちに皮膚がジットリと濡れてきて、背筋を汗が走るのがなんとも。

しかし終わり方は上記の作品よりもまたはっきりしていません。ともすれば無責任とも取れるような終わり方です。初めて恩田陸作品を読む人にはおすすめできません。
台風一過、といったような爽やかな読後感ではないですね。
月の裏側は表と違ってのっぺりとしたお顔らしく。
