「私」は、恋人から「おれ、今日、人を殺して来ちゃった」と告白される。女を名字で呼ぶ主義だという相当変な男。「私」は彼をかくまう。しかし、ちょっとした出来事が原因で逃亡生活は終わる……。この短編集の冒頭に置かれた「熱いジャズの焼き菓子」のプロットだ。　山田詠美は本当に短編小説がうまい。エッセーみたいに筆の向くまま書き始めたように見えて、最後にアッとうならせる。構成を感じさせない構成力。他人には真似ができない。収録された9つの物語は、殺人を始め、放火、売春、のぞき、強制猥褻などの罪とそれに対する罰を中心に据えている。むろん凡庸な罰ではない。掉尾の一編「最後の資料」は実話だという。（石飛徳樹）

５年間のことが描かれている。
夜、クスクス笑い声が聞こえるから、何してるのかなと
思ったら、じゃんけんをして過ごしていた二人。
その場面で、とてつもなく涙がこぼれ出た。
人を愛することと、人を失うことの全てが、この短編から
うかがえる、すばらしい作品です。

全編、詠美さんの表現力の鋭さに感嘆しながら読みましたが、
「最後の資料」で特にせつなくなりました。
闘病ノートに記された「今回のケース」という
言葉。子供達を甘やかす義弟の心の内。

詠美さんの死をテーマにしたお話は、どれも
「逃れられない恐怖」と「残された時間の
甘やかさ」でマグネットのように読者の心を
引き付けて離さない。

読む人の精神状態や年齢で感じ方が違って来ると
思う本書は、時間を空けて何度も読みたい１冊です。
