頭脳明晰な女子高校生である主人公は、何匹もの動物を毒殺し、さらには実の母も毒殺しようとする。
動物を毒殺する時は、一度に致死量を与えるので、その場で絶命するが、母には、微量の毒を、長期間飲食物などに混入する。
娘を全力で愛す母が、体長を悪化させる過程が克明に描かれ、読んでいて悪寒すら覚える。

物語の主眼は、主人公の尋常ではない心の揺れを、深い心理描写によって描いている点だ。
主人公の理屈は、幼少の頃に、飼い犬を病気のために、獣医により安楽死させられた事から出発している。
安楽死は、苦痛から逃れられる、甘美な手段だととらえた。

本書では、ストレスの多い仕事に忙殺されている母を死に追いやる事が、主人公にとって、母への最大の愛なのだ。
主人公は、多くの屁理屈で、自らを正当化しようとし、最愛の人の死を悲しむ人間を、偽善者呼ばわりまでする。
幼少時の一つの体験が、こんなにも偏狂的な内的世界を形成しているのには驚かされる。

しかし、哀しい。
主人公の心の中は、こんなにも殺伐としているのか。
唯一の救いは、主人公がこれで正しいのか？　と自問自答する下りがある事だ。

あまりにも切ない。
偏狂的とはいえ、毒殺に甘美な快感すら覚える非尋常性が、猛烈に切ない。

猟奇的心理を前面に出した本書。
悲しく、切ないが、断じて共感は出来ない。

2007年末に清野かほりの「スパイラル」（ポプラ社）を読んだ時、
帯で新堂冬樹がその本を絶賛していた。
それまで新堂冬樹作品を読んだことがなかったのだけれども、
他の作家を褒めていながら、自身も同時期にこの本を出版している・・・
どんな話を書く人なのだろう？と、興味を持って読むことにした。
何の前知識もなく読んで驚いた、これは2〜3年前におきた静岡の女子高生による
母親毒殺未遂事件がベースになっていたからだ。
読み進めれば進めるほど、あの女子高生が書いたのでは？と錯覚してしまい、
何度もゾっとし、不快な気分にもさせられた。
決して楽しい作品ではないが、恐いもの見たさに少女の心理を
垣間見ることのできる面白さがこの本にはある。

正直ガッカリ。
売れてくると、やはりこうなっちゃうのかな。
