前回の小松＆中田の「鼓動」は間違いなく傑作でしたが、今回の「誇り」は明らかに小松さんと中田
の接触回数が少なく、数少ないインタヴューや立ち話程度の対話で、かつかつ一冊の本にしたという
様子がうかがえます。サッカーウォッチャーには特に目新しいことはないです。
ネタが少ないぶんは、小松さんが主人公となり、物憂げにドイツを行き来し、中田を追う様子が物語
の軸になっています。そんなの読みたくないんだけど。対象としての中田の捕らえ方も、中田＆サニー
が提示したい中田像をステレオタイプに提示しているだけで、所謂中田スポークスマンに堕してしま
ってる気がします。
前回は中田がペルージャで最初のシーズンを迎えるまでだったので、最盛期のセリエでの活躍を知り
たかったんですけど、サニーの依頼がないと無理だったんでしょうか。

彼の現役引退はショックだったが冷静に考えれば拍子抜けした。
キャリア晩年の彼は迷走していた。
巨額のパルマ移籍からのスランプ、ボローニャでの一瞬の復活、フィレンツェ〜ボルトン移籍でのベンチ生活。
離脱している間もはや中村のチームと化していた日本代表にエゴイズムと仲間への叱咤激励という悪影響しか与えられなかった事。

結局彼は誇りという名の下にサッカーをしていたが結局最後はその誇りを守るためにサッカーを捨てた。
厳しいがこれは事実だと思う。

この本は関係者への作者の取材、本人へのインタビュー、当然出場する試合の観戦をを通じて欧州のチームを渡り歩く彼の姿を描き、昨年のワールドカップでの本人の苦悩、そんな中で中田英寿が何を考えていたか？が描かれている。

　個人的に注目している人物のノンフィクションであり、久々に貪るように読み耽り、先を急いだ。あの日本人にとって忌々しいオーストラリア戦・・・いや、健闘が称えられたドイツ戦よりも以前から、結果は見えていたようだ。日本の中でも非常にレベルの高い集団でも・・・だからこそ、単純に力を合わせる事が如何に難しいのか？を思い知らされる本であった。

　本を読んで印象的だったのは彼が持つプロ意識についてである。いろいろな場面で文面から読んで取れる中田英寿さんのプロ意識は鬼気迫るモノがある。世界最高峰の舞台で、プロとして生きてゆく厳しさの真の姿であろう。

　言い訳をしない・・・ベストを尽くす・・・プロ意識を持ち、実践することはこうも厳しいものか・・・文面から想像するしかない本人の苦しさはいかばかりであったろうか？その苦しさを乗り越えてこそ、あのような素晴らしいプレーができるわけである。

　そして引き際の潔さ。彼自身の理想と、実際のプレーの差が、引退を決断させる大きな原因と描かれているが、最高のプレーで観客を魅了してきた彼ならではの決断であろう。それも最高のプレーヤーとしての。

　これから中田英寿さんにどのような将来が待っているのか？楽しみになった一冊であった。
