林住期とは、社会的責任をある程度果たした50歳以降の人生の区間である。
従来の観念では60代定年後というのは、「余生」でしかなかった。
しかし、社会的責任から解放されてからこそ、人々は自己の充実を図るべきではないか・・・
そう五木氏は提案する。

世のため、社会のため、家族のために力を尽くす期間を終えた後にこそ、
自分が生き生きすることに取り組んでみることが大切ではないのか。
おそらく退職を控えた団塊世代に向けたメッセージではなかろうか。
充実した人生とするためには、最終的に自分のために人生を過ごすことだ、
という意見に同意したい。

肩に力の入っていないスマートな文章だ。

　古代インドでは、人生を四つの時期に分けて考えたという。「学生期（がくしょうき）」、「家住期（かじゅうき）」、そして、「林住期（りんじゅうき）」と「遊行期（ゆぎょうき）」。「林住期」とは、社会人の務めを終えたあと、すべての人が迎える、もっとも輝かしい「第三の人生」のことである。

　この五木寛之の『林住期』は、母親の衝撃的な死を告白し、「私は悪人である」と自己規定するなど、やや重いテーマを背負っていた『運命の足音』（02年、幻冬舎）とは違って、少し肩の力が抜けたのかな、と私には思える。本書の扉にある前述の「四住期（しじゅうき）」という考え方は、紀元前２世紀から紀元後２世紀あたりの古代インドで生まれたそうである。そして、五木は、人生のクライマックスは50歳から75歳までの「林住期」にあるのではないか、という。

　もとより、本書は「林住期」についての指南書ではなく、五木の問題提起に対して解答を出すのは私たち自身である。だが、「更年期」や「鬱」、「健康」や「呼吸」の問題などを、私たちに気付かせてくれている。それらを受容するか否かは別として、「一番重要なのは、人生の後半をオマケと考え、峠を越したり下り坂と考える思想を打ち破ること」（あとがきにかえて）にある。五木と同年生まれのさる作家は、「老いをしっかりみつめて味わう」と言いながら、公私を弁えない「権力の亡者」となり果てたが、五木に関しては「看板倒れ」ということはないだろう。

執筆活動やテレビの寺社めぐりで、元気に活躍している著者が、もう75歳になっていることを本書で初めて知りました。その著者が、人生100歳時代での新しい人間観、特に今までの50歳以後の人生の価値観を変革し、新たな生き方を提案しています。

50歳以後はオマケでなく、それまでの全てのものが、一体となって花開くとき、黄金の時期と捉えるべきだそうです。確かに50歳を境に心身の衰えはあります。そのために著者は養生法として、呼吸法や腰痛を防ぐ腰・膝の使い方また体の内部からの異常を知らせるメッセージに耳を傾けることを勧めています。日々小さいことでも「気づき」ながら積み重ねてすることが、もっとも大事なようです。

著者が実践している体験からの話です。しかも他の著書と同様、読者の側にいて暖かく話す口調を感じます。該当年齢者ではない人にも、説得力はあると思います。
「この世は思うようにはならない」という著者の考えが形作られたであろう少年時代の回顧は、悲しく心に沁みます。またその苦しい考えを受けとめたのは、著者が肉化した仏陀の初期の教えのようです。これも納得できました。

枯れてはいるが命の立ち上がる気配があるひまわりの絵が、本書の扉絵として載せられています。奥さんが描かれたそうです。羨ましいほど本書のモティーフと鮮やかに合っています。
