元々、宮部さんは一見小物なようで実はかえってそこがたちが悪い、
という悪を描くのが上手いよな、と思っていました。
たとえば「今夜は眠れない」で
誰からも愛されるよい子ちゃんの見本のようだった女の子の
ジコチューぶりが最後に暴露されたときは喝采ものでした。

私は「誰か」よりこちらが好きでした。「誰か」のときは
杉村一家がちょっとリアリティがないぐらい
メルヘンチックに描かれていたのと、依頼人の姉妹がさいごまで
どちらも好きになれなかったので、あまり感情移入できないのがちょっと、だったのですが、
今回、ついに杉村家も怪しくなってきたので逆に興味をそそられています。

途中購入した家の環境調査に
躊躇なく大金を使う菜穂子に違和感を感じる場面からはじまり、
結局その家を今度はなんの躊躇もなく手放すという菜穂子に
夫の杉村一郎が引っかかっている、という箇所が詳細に語られているので
これは今後（絶対続編がまたあると思いますが）
伏線になるのだろうな、と思いました。

それにしてもこの作品での「困ったちゃん」女性はこわかったです。
一応毒殺事件の話なのに毒殺犯人は
ぜんぜんどうでも良く、この女性のインパクトが強かった。
名もない毒ではありますが、この種の毒はたしかに
世の中に増えていってると思います。
ただ、宮部さんが上手いのは、杉村一郎の「逆玉」状況に対して
大なり小なり毒のある発言をせずにいられない人々も
また「毒」なのだ、ということもちゃんと表現していることですね。

「火車」「理由」みたいに一気に読ませる力はないのですが、通勤の時など細切れな時間につらつら読むには適している良品だと思います。

本屋でさんざまよった挙句購入。（ハードカバーはめったに買わないので）
しかし買ってよかった。通勤中に読もうと思っていたけれどとまらず、最後は結局会社のトイレでこそこそ読みきってしまった。ごめんなさい、会社。

大筋は毒物混入無差別殺人事件が軸になるのだけれど、さまざまな毒、さまざまな事件が絡みあって話は進んでいく。各々のエピソードが興味深く、それだけでじゅうぶんおもしろかった。
けれど、それらを最後にまとめあげる手腕はさすが宮部さん！あーー、こういうことが言いたいがための話でしたか、と最後迄きて深く考えさせられた。

世の中には名もなき毒がたくさんある。それは誰もが持っている。誰もがその毒にさらされて生きている・・・。
生まれながらに不平等な世の中。北見さんの言葉を借りるなら「生きにくく、生かしづらい」か。
深く考えさせられた。ああ、人間こそが毒。

惜しむらくは、いろいろなエピソードが絡まりすぎて、各々が若干薄くなってしまっていることか。
もう少しそのへん聞かしてくれんかい！？と思う個所がちらほら。それは欲張りってもんですか？

この、もの悲しい読後感は、何なんだろうかと思う。正直で全うな生き方をする人間が不幸に見舞われることか、権力・地位・財力を得てもなお無力感を感ずることか。どうやら、ここで描かれている登場人物は、正直で素朴な主人公も、権力や財力を得ているその義父も、また犯罪を犯した人々も、皆、満たされぬ思いを持っているからかもしれぬ。その満たされる思いを、解消するすべをもっているか否かで、犯罪者になるか否かが決まる。犯罪者、異常者と、ここで描かれている良い人々との、実は差異があまりないことに、もの悲しさを感ずるような気がする。
