道尾作品は、綾辻行人や京極夏彦からの影響が取りざたされているようですが、
少なくとも、本作から受ける印象は「横溝正史の隔世遺伝」といったものです。

横溝の世界観を違和感なく、現代にアップ・トゥー・デイトさせた物語――、
という解釈が、個人的に一番しっくりきます。


その印象を裏付けるものとしては、『獄門島』 の「気ちがいじゃが仕方がない」
を彷彿させる言葉の聞き間違い、あるいはダブルミーニングが多用されている
ことが挙げられます。


真夜中に響く「……マリ……マリ……」という不明瞭な声、探偵役のバツニという言葉、
そして、「鎌で、あの人は――私が殺した」というある人物の告白……。

一つひとつを見れば、他愛もないダジャレめいたものなのですが、聞いた人が
勘違いし、しかもそれが他に連鎖していくことで、「不可解な連続殺人事件」
というメカニズムを駆動していくことになります。


著者は、あるインタヴューのなかで、本作について以下のように語っています。


　　〈「単純な連続殺人ではなく、一つの死自体が別の死を呼び込み、
　　　それが連鎖してしまった」という不運を描いた話〉


これに続けて、犯人が仕掛けるトリックはあまり重視しておらず、むしろ
〈「トリックが人を殺す」ような話は書きたくない〉とまで述べています。

人を殺すのはあくまで人であって、決してトリックではない――、と。


かねてから著者は、「本格ミステリは人間を描く手段として最も有効だ」という主旨の発言
を繰り返していますが、その真骨頂が、本作において余すところなく発揮されています。

第５回ホラーサスペンス大賞特別賞受賞作『背の眼』の続編に当たる作品。前作に続いて、ホラー作家の道尾、探偵役の「真備霊現象探求所」の真備（まきび）とその助手北見が登場する。

今回の舞台は滋賀県の南端の山間にある仏像工房「瑞祥房（ずいしょうぼう）」。ストーリーは、取材に訪れた道尾がまたしても不可思議な現象に遭遇するところからはじまる。彼は夜中に何かをつぶやく男の声と、仏像たちが動き回る音を聞く。さらに口を開けて笑う千手観音と割れた頭から血を流す仏像も見たのである。彼の話を聞いた真備はさっそく北見と道尾を連れて「瑞祥房」へ赴く。

ひとり、またひとりと姿を消す工房の弟子たち、２０年前に失踪したという仏師と工房主の妹、謎めいたことを言う車椅子の先代主、ミステリアスな雰囲気とホラー趣味は前作に引けをとらない。

しかし、やがて真備の推理は２０年の歳月を越えて真相に到達する。振り返ってみれば本書は、登場人物たちの言動や表情、仏像たち、そして「瑞祥房」自体のそこかしこに見事な伏線が張り巡らされた本格ミステリーだった。
冒頭でホラー的要素を配し、結末に至ってすべてを合理的・論理的に解明してゆく筆者・道尾秀介の手腕はさすがである。

読み慣れない設定でしたが、すらすらと読むことができました。
シリーズものの2作目だと思うのですが、先にこちらを読んでしまったので、ちょっと残念でした。
2・3時間、違う世界を旅するには丁度いい本だと思います。
