私はアメリカ育ちの日本人で、所詮は自由や民主という価値観にどっぷり漬かった人間
なのだが、小林氏の主張は日本のサヨクのそれより遥かに共感できる。

なぜならアメリカ人は、自分の宗教や民族性を冒涜する人間を尊敬しないからだ。

自分の国と民族と宗教を愛するという意味では、小林氏に共感できるアメリカ人は多いのではないだろうか。

日本人は自分の国の歴史についてあまりにも無知であるという点で、著者の意見はもっともだと思います。
明治維新以来、日本は欧米列強の帝国主義から自分を守るために懸命に努力し、その結果、朝鮮半島をめぐって中華と衝突し、また欧米列強の利権と衝突することとなってしまった。
自国を、あるいは家族を守るために（著者は否定しているが）心ならずも命を落とした英霊、あるいは日本人を代表して命を落とした当時の指導者（もしかしたら戦争に負けたという日本人に対する結果責任は在ったかも知れないが）に哀悼の意を表するのは、日本人として、あり、だと思います（他者にそれを強いることはしませんが）。
靖国神社、東京裁判等々について、自国からの視点があまりに欠けている現状を憂える著者の心情が伝わってくる１冊でした。

これを読んでいて、死んだ祖父と父のことを思い出した。
私が幼い頃１度だけ、祖父が戦争の話をしていて、体の銃痕を見せてくれようとした。
私の父がそれを見つけ、それをすごい剣幕で咎めた。祖父はただ黙っていた。
それ以来、祖父が戦争の話をすることは二度となかった。
マッカーサーを立派な人と言っていた父と、国のために戦ったという祖父。
多分、私以外にもこういうご家族をお持ちな方は多数いるのではないでしょうか。

靖国が何かすらも知らないで、日本を知っているとはいえないだろう。
御柱に手を合わせ、頭を下げれなくて、何が日本国だろう。
