以前、著者のグレゴリー・クラーク氏はＮＨＫの教育テレビの「視点」という番組で自説を主張していました。
かなり流暢な日本語だったのを覚えています。
日本語、中国語、ロシア語などを聞いて覚えたのだそうです。
そんなわけで、私は著者の主張は説得力があると思います。
日本語は英語よりも音の数が少ないことは誰でも知っています。
人種を問わず普通の人間が口から出す音ですから、言語学や音声学の知識はまったく必要ありません。
英語圏では日系人を含めてアジア系の人もアフリカ系の人もみな、英語の発音ができます。
英語のほうが音の数が多いということは、逆に言えば英語のほうが同音異義語が少ないということであり、聞き取って理解しやすいということになります。
たとえば、日本語で葉と歯、子と弧、気と木、気と木、自信と地震、火事と家事、現象と減少などは聞き取れても区別しにくい場合がありますが、英語ではこういうことが極めてまれです。
英語で同音異義語が少ないのは、それだけ母音と子音の数が多いからですが、これは正しい努力をして少し練習すれば誰でもできるようになるのです。
英語の学習に言語学や音声学を持ち出して必要以上に難しく考えるのは日本人の悪いクセではないかと思います。

一言で、耳から学びなさい！　懸命に聴きなさい！
（英語は絶対勉強するな！　と同じ論だ）
発音は最初が肝心とも言っておられる。
（だめな発音を最初に身につけると抜けないと）
ということで、発音をしっかり学んでから
懸命に聴くといい、ということになります。

変な癖がつく前に出会いたかったよ。

著者（イギリス人）のように英語を母国語とする者が日本語を「耳だけ」で学ぶのと、日本人が英語を同様に学ぶのでは雲泥の差がある。　　日本語には２０数種類の「音」しかないが（つまり日本人はその数だけ聞き分けられる）、英語には５０近くもある。　　つまり、英語人は「自分の知っている音」を日本語に当てはめさえすれば大体は済んでしまうが、日本人は２０以上もの「自分が知らない音」を一つ一つ身につけなければ英語もうまく聞き取れないし、話せない。　　このような基本的なことを無視して「私の"ディープリスニング方式"ならだれでも語学の達人になれます」と著者が言うのは全くナンセンスだ。　　著者が言語学や英語教育学の専門家でないことを考えるとまあ仕方がないのかもしれないが。
