　人類生態学専攻の研究者が、「自然の中にいきるしくみ」をテーマとして、パプアニューギニアで半年近く過ごした体験を書いたものである。
　「人間が増えすぎないようにするしくみ」として、先に生まれた子どもが三歳から四歳になるまで次の子どもを産んではいけないという村のきまりや、焼畑に行く前の夜には子づくりをしてはいけないというきまりがあるという。しかし、近年では「村のきまりを守るのをやめて、聖書に書いてあることを守りなさい」と教えられて出生率が高くなっている。その結果、人口増加を招いて「場所をめぐる争い」などが起こり始めているという。
　「ハメイギニという親戚のグループごとに領土が決まって」いて、彼らは「最低でも三つ以上のハメイギニのメンバーになっている」という。このしくみは非常に興味深い。（字数の関係からこのしくみを詳しく説明できないのは残念である。）
　「石蒸し料理のサツマイモは、とてもおいしい。なぜかはわからないけど、鍋で煮ただけのサツマイモとはまったく別の味になる」という著者の発見は、日本のキャンプでも試してみることができそうだ。
著者の試算では、「ウェナニ村の人たちが一日に食べる動物性タンパクはわずかに一〇グラムしなかい」そうだ。人間の必要最低摂取量は五〇グラムなので、疑問に感じた著者は、ウェナニ村のサツマイモを日本に持ち帰って分析した。その結果、日本のサツマイモのおよそ二・五倍のタンパクが含まれていることがわかったという。
　その他にも戦争の話や、紛争解決や結婚式に必要不可欠なブタの話など、話題はつきない。ところどころに挿入している写真も、イメージの手助けとなり有用である。
