待ちかねていた邦訳です。どの作品も何回も読みたくなる仕掛けが
あり、それでいて難解ではない。「アメリカの七夜」はやや長めの
作品ですが、中近東の王子が退廃した未来のアメリカを旅するという
話でずっと不安感が漂い、結末の一行を読むと思わずもう一度どこで
何がおかしくなったのか、とページを繰り戻してしまうでしょう。
「デス博士の島」も複雑ながら面白い。複雑と難解は別物です。
本書への不満は原書にあった短い数編が省略されていること。それ
でもジーン・ウルフのファンにはたまらないし、新しいファンを
作ってくれること間違いないので星５つにします。

ウルフはＳＦ作家の中でトップクラスの技能を持つ職人だと思います。多くの批評家や作家たちがそう発言しています。本書は彼の６冊目の翻訳で、翻訳では唯一の短編集であり（『ケルベロス...』は連作中編集ですが）、最もとっつき安い本です。実際私も数十年前ＳＦマガジンで本書の表題作を読んだのがウルフを知ったきっかけです。私だけではなく、多くのウルフファンが、本書の表題作を読んで彼に注目したことと思います。そんな傑作です。やっと短編集が出ました、最高のセレクションで、最高の翻訳で、です。初訳の中篇２編とまえがきだけでも買う価値有り。

ちょっと難解なストーリーが多くて、一度読んだだけでは理解できない部分がありました。
でも、何度か読み返していくと、あるときピピっとわかるのです。なんかクセになりそうな感覚です。
この本は、するめのようなSF小説と言っても過言ではないでしょう。
