ウッドハウスは以前からずっと気になっていたのに日本語版がなく、古い作品だからもう映画化でもない限りチャンスはないかなと諦めていたところに嬉しい刊行ラッシュ！出してくれただけで星５つ、って感じですが（笑）個人的には翻訳にも満足しています。
ユーモア文学を「英文学者センセイ」が訳してしまうと妙に真面目くさった古色蒼然とした日本語になることが多いのですが、この訳者は「あとがき」にあるように専門の翻訳者というよりは、ヒュー・グラント映画やモンティ・パイソンといった今の英国サブカルチャーに通じた方がファンとして取り組まれたみたいなので、作品に対するリスペクトや愛着が随所に感じられるし、遊び心とか軽妙なことば使いに長けていて、むしろハマリ役ではないかと思いました。
こういう作品の面白さって、なんて言ったらいいんでしょうね。英国独特のちょっとシニカルで、すっとぼけてて余裕のあるユーモアっていうか。あまり他の国では見かけませんね。これを退屈と思うか、面白いと思うかはほとんどその人のシュミの世界でしょう。原文と付け合せて正しい訳かどうかチェックしたわけではありませんが、いわゆる「ブンガク作品」ではないので、私は作品の持つ特性と魅力を十分に生かせているこの翻訳で楽しんで読んでいます。
ウッドハウスを知らない人って多いと思いますが、たとえばブリジット・ジョーンズやジェーン・オースティン、またミスター・ビーンとかリチャード・カーティスの映画なんかが好きな人なら、文学アレルギーの人でも試してみてもらいたいです。もしかしたら生涯の友となるかも…。

ダメ男の若旦那と、優秀なる執事ジーヴスの繰り広げるユーモア小説です。

構成は連作短編で、一気に読み終えるともったいないので、すこしづつ読もうと思っても、ついつい次の話を読んでしまいます。
いわゆる中毒性のある本です。

この手の物語の例にもれず、若旦那が自分で考えて行動すると大抵失敗します。そしてジーヴスの出番となるわけですが、若旦那がジーヴスの手を借りずに何かしようとする理由がまた・・・。

この「ジーヴス」シリーズは今後も出る予定らしいので、今後に期待大です。

下の方に出ていたスープうんぬんのレヴューには賛成できない。
だいたい「スープの中にいる」と訳してある箇所なんて一体どこにあるんだ。
バーティーは「僕はスープに浸かってるんだ」って言っているじゃないか。訳者は意識的に直訳しているのだ。
わざと「スープ」としてあるからこそ、「うん、足の上までなんだ」のニュアンスが伝わって笑えるんだろうが。
ユーモア小説翻訳の成否は、ひとえに笑えるかどうかだ。
絶対にこれしかないと思える人物造型。リズミカルでビビッドな訳文。笑えるのはこちらだ、才気が違う。
