　語りは騙り。ジーン・ウルフは巧妙な騙り手だ。思わず舌をまく騙りのワザはふたつある。ひとつは、人間になりすますことのできる異星人を設定したこと。異星人が人間を騙ることが可能な世界では、「私が人間であること」や「私が私であること」の確実性は揺らいでくる。本書は、このような設定の中で、語り口のまったく違う３つの物語が物語られるのだが、ここで「物語を語るうえで客観的な時間を明示しない」という第２の騙りのワザをかけることで、「私」の起源（私はいつ生まれたのか？　ニュートン時間で？）はよりいっそう曖昧となってくる。「私とはいったい何者なのか？」――こうして、また、私は本書を本棚から引き出すだろう、何度も、何度も。傑作だ。

ジーン・ウルフの作品は難解と言われるが、難解ではない。本書などは
一ページ目から引き込まれてしまう。一ページ目の第２パラグラフまで
読まれたい。作者の巧妙な語り口に捕らえられているだろう。
難解というよりは巧妙・複雑であり、けっして読者を飽かせるような
ことはない。このような作者・作品を取り上げた企画に敬意を表したい。
ＳＦマガジン10月号がジーン・ウルフを特集しているので、そちらも
読まれることをおすすめする。

強烈な作品。
難解で時に私を措いて遠くへ行ってしまう時もあったが、読み終えてみると、これは度重なる読書にも耐える本だな、という感想。

確かに難しいから、理解したとは言えない。けれど、詩的で残酷、そして美しい一冊で、面白かった。こっそりと示唆してある事柄が多くて、誰か解説してくれないかと思ってしまうほど。他の作品も読んでみたかったのだけれど、みつけられなかった。
